GUIDE ON MARA RIVER CAMP IN KENYA
Secreted away in a riverine forest, the Mara River Camp is an economy accommodation lying beside the chocolate brown Mara River. Sitting at the base of the Oloololo Hills, close to the western edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, the camp is suitable for the no-frills traveler looking to spend a budget safari holiday in the magical lands of Kenya. A raised deck extends out to the river’s edge where you can spend long hours watching the hippos soaking and grunting at each other and crocodiles basking on the sandbanks, their jaws wide open waiting for the passing of the Great Migration. Every year from July to October, over 1.5 to 2 million wildebeests, elands, zebras and gazelles travel through the game reserve looking for fresh grass and water. On this journey, they must cross the Mara River and risk becoming a meal for the crocodiles, and again avert ambushes on the banks by the big cats. You could watch this leg of their fascinating struggle during your game drives at strategic crossing points on the river, the perfect way to conclude your day on your trip into Masai Mara Reserve. The 22 guest tents at Mara River Camp are lined up in the glade, some partly curtained off by the trees and foliage to accord guests some privacy. They also have 1 log cabin for AfricanMecca guests who prefer a cottage-like experience. As you relax on the patio outside your room, you might spot the resident zebra, impala or dik dik stopping by to sample the grass or the vervet monkeys scampering in the trees. The canvas tents are sheltered under an additional covering and have either a double or twin beds. Mesh windows allow in the cool breezes, scented with the ambience of the wilderness and the songs of birds while rugs grace the tarp-covered floors. Each tent also includes an open closet, full-length mirror and rustic side tables with reading lamps. The en-suite bathroom includes a home-like glass shower stall and the modest amenities typical of a budget establishment.During your safari vacation in the south-western plains of Kenya, you will be able to experience the warmth of its local people beginning with the friendly service of Mara River Camp. They enthusiastically talk to you about their culture and welcome you to their village close by for your enlightenment travel experience in East Africa. You will also be awed by the in-depth knowledge they have of the rich wildlife and also the flora from which they make almost magical healing elixirs. One of these experienced Maasai will accompany you on game drives in a custom-equipped safari vehicle to introduce you to their world that hosts a plethora of mammals and more than 450 species of birds. You might even chance to spot most if not all of the Big Five of Africa. Enjoy bush walks where your safari guide will show you how to read animal tracks, droppings, identify insects and discern birds' nests skillfully hidden in the shrubbery. Rediscover a different facet of the Mara Triangle as you float above it on a balloon safari and return to your camp for a later morning of leisure in and around the swimming pool. You could also take a rejuvenating massage at their spa and as dusk falls over the reserve, spend time beside the campfire with your safari mates and relive every unforgettable moment of your AfricanMecca tour in Masai Mara.
