Masai Mara Horseback Riding Safari In Kenya

Published By AfricanMecca Safaris | Blog CategoriesKenya, Safari Planning.

UPDATE: Half day horse riding safaris in Masai Mara are now only available at Naboisho and Olerai Conservancies only.

The multi-day riding tours are available on a minimum duration of 7 nights, and rides are available in the secluded section of Mara North Conservancy on scheduled dates based on a minimum of 5 and maximum of 12 riders. Bespoke tailor-made riding for a minimum of 5 nights is available on request for a minimum of 1 rider. Do contact us for more details.

Masai Mara National Reserve is a premier safari destination that offers an iconic wilderness experience in Africa. Known primarily for the massive herds of wildebeest and zebras that traverse the area as part of the Great Migration, Masai Mara is cherished amongst those who visit. AfricanMecca Safaris specializes in tours that provide numerous immersive experiences in the natural beauty of Kenya, and a horseback tour in the private conservancy of Masai Mara is sure to be amongst your most prized memories. With 16 amazing riding horses in the center of the protected ecosystem, our goal is to offer our guests access to an exceptional equestrian adventure.

The managers of the horse riding operation in Masai Mara have spent the last 12 years operating stables in the Grumeti Reserve of Tanzania in western Serengeti, and now they bring their expertise to Masai Mara. Experienced riders who are at least 14 years old and weigh a minimum of 95 kilograms can partake of this activity. With two daily rides with a maximum of eight guests per outing the best guides, horses, and equipment in southwestern Kenya, you are assured of a superb adventure vacation activity.

The rides venture into Naboisho Conservancy, Olerai Conservancy and Mara North Conservancy which all offer some of the most stunning vistas and wildlife experiences in the area. Depending on the timing of your extraordinary wilderness vacation in the supreme glory of Kenya, expect one of two experiences, each of which with its own unique advantages. In late May, the wildebeest migration arrives from the Loita Hills and remains in the area until about November.

The largest influx of gnus occurs starting from July through August and September. The wildebeests migrate back to Serengeti starting in October. This creates an energetic scenario that you observe from your mount. When the migration is not in the area, your horseback tour has a more tranquil feeling as you watch the resident herbivores search for tender morsels and water while the carnivores keep a careful eye out for prey. No matter the time of year you choose for your dream adventure holiday, the safari experience of horseback riding will be more than you imagined for your time in East Africa.

About The Horse Stables In Masai Mara

At the center of your African equestrian travel experience in Masai Mara are the 16 of the finest horses that include boerperds, thoroughbreds and other breeds that measure 15 to 17 horse hands in height. Boerperds are known for being intelligent, brave, gentle-tempered, hardy and sure-footed. These characteristics make them amongst the most popular breeds for riding safaris and other equestrian activities. The stable includes medical facilities to care for the horses as well as farriers and groomers. Tack includes English-style bridles, and you choose from Western, English and South African saddles. Safety stirrups are required. The full-service stables also have hats, full chaps, socks, riding boots, half chaps, gloves and jodhpurs should you need them.

Arranging Your Horse Riding Safari In Masai Mara

The stables are situated along the border of Olare Motorogi Conservancy and Masai Mara National Reserve. The two camps that are nearest the stables are Great Plains’ Mara Plains Camp and Mara Expedition Camp. Each of these camps is within two kilometers of the stables, but guests from other Masai Mara camps and lodges are welcome. We also recommend combining your stay at Offbeat Mara Camp with its mobile riding camp for multi-day rides. Whenever you book your horseback riding safari in Kenya, we will ask you to complete a questionnaire that helps us coordinate the best option and appropriate details for your wondrous trip. Based on your riding experience, weight, height and other factors, you will be allocated a horse that offers the optimum riding experience.

Horseback truly is a phenomenal way to discover the pristine beauty of Masai Mara’s surrounding outback. Savannahs, streams, rivers and plains extend as far as the eye can see, and you will come to appreciate why it is one of the most valued ecosystems on the planet. We recommend that you complement the experience with a horse-riding tour to Chyulu Hills at Ol Donyo Lodge, part of the ecosystem of nearby Amboseli, to see Mount Kilimanjaro, volcanic geology, open plains, acacia forests, diverse fauna and much, much more.
