The Serengeti National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the oldest protected ecosystem in the world, making it an ideal safari destination for guests who seek the thrill and adventure of the African bush. The northern portion of the park is especially intriguing, as this is where the annual wildebeest migration encounters the dangerous Mara River, filled with hungry crocodiles waiting for a single misstep by the hooved beasts.

Less than 300 meters from this immense spectacle is the mid-range tented accommodation of Serengeti River Camp. The camp operates year-round for world travelers who want to see the resident species of Tanzania. The energy intensifies between July and October, when more than 1.5 million wildebeests, interspersed with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, traverse the area and cross over into Masai Mara in Kenya in search of prime grazing.

Accommodation At Serengeti River Camp

This charming, authentic bush camp offers AfricanMecca guests 12 classic tents including 2 family tents. In the sleeping area, you’ll find a wrought-iron bed draped with a canopy of mosquito netting, flanked by the warm tones of wood nightstands and soft glowing bedside lamps. Underfoot are canvas floors covered with colorful rugs adding beautiful textures to the space.

At the back of the tent is an ensuite bathroom with running water, complete with a small vanity, single basin, a large mirror, lighting, flush toilet and shower area. A nearby wardrobe is equipped plush bathrobes and plenty of space for hanging your personal items. The undersink cabinet has drawers and an open cabinet for smaller items.

Electricity is available 24 hours a day, and each tent has charging points for your devices and electronics. At the entry of your tent is a shaded verandah furnished with upholstered chairs, wooden coffee table and other touches that create an inviting place to relax and watch the wildlife movements that take place just outside the camp.

AfricanMecca guests have the option of five double tents, three twin tents, and a triple tent. For your
family safari vacation, Serengeti River Camp offers a larger tent that accommodates up to four people, perfect for parents traveling with children to discover the impeccable beauty of Serengeti National Park.

Safari At Serengeti River Camp

Traveling across the plains of Tanzania in a 4x4 safari vehicle on your dream trip to see iconic species and the thunderous energy of the Great Serengeti Wildebeest Migration may feel almost surreal. But there are practical details to be considered. Every morning you’ll meet with your guide to plan the day, to discuss not only your route through the park but also the animals and behaviors you’re most excited to see. Your guide has an intimate knowledge of the park and its ecosystem and is able to pinpoint the best vantage points, even in the less occupied areas of northern Serengeti.

Game drives are offered in the morning and afternoon, and each of these times reveals unique animal behaviors. Your AfricanMecca wilderness holiday can also include a day-long game drive with lunch in the wilds of Serengeti National Park. As the sun sets on the horizon, your guide finds a bit of solitude for cocktails before returning to camp for drinks around the campfire and a delightful dinner. Guests also have the option of partaking an early morning air safari on a balloon, affording superb views of flora and fauna underneath.

Dining At Serengeti River Camp

Relax with a good book or snap photos of the landscape from the comfort of cozy lounging couches in the central tent. The bartender stands ready to prepare your favorite cocktail. Meals are served in the same central area, featuring local fruits and vegetables, beef, chicken, goat meat, fish and other scrumptious ingredients. Guest favorites include soups and desserts. Picnic lunches in the African bush during an extended game tour are a lovely way to satisfy your appetite while enjoying the wildlife of northern Serengeti.

  2. The camp is open year around though the migration only happens in specific months from July to October.
  3. Guests have access to primary activities only—specifically game drives in Serengeti; the camp does not offer other activities such as nature walks.
