GUIDE ON MARA UNDER CANVAS IN SERENGETI

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Mara Under Canvas

The ground shakes under your feet as a massive herd of wildebeest passes by on the way to the shoreline of the mighty Mara River. This is only a taste of the magical safari adventure that awaits in the Serengeti National Park. Home to an unimaginable abundance and diversity of resident species, the region is famous for what is known as the “greatest natural spectacle on Earth.”

In this prime remote wilderness, our guests enjoy an abundance of resident wildlife, including herbivores, territorial carnivores and avi-fauna small and large. Mara Under Canvas is strategically sited in the north Serengeti from June to November, so you are sure to see many of Africa’s most fascinating creatures during your outback tour.

The friendly and attentive camp staff takes care of you in every way. Your tent is a comfortable and relaxing private space where you can sleep, read, lounge and prepare for the day’s activities. Mara Under Canvas also has a lovely lounge area with books and games, as well as a campfire area for evening chats with guests and guides.

Accommodation At Mara Under Canvas

Although you find yourself in one of Tanzania’s most remote areas, comfort is always close by at Mara Under Canvas. The camp offers only 11 guest tents including one family tent, which are set up next to iconic African trees like the umbrella acacias. Each tent features a king-size or twin beds, as well as solar lighting lamps, nightstands with reading lights, a luggage rack, table and billowing curtains to ensure a one-of-a-kind stay that’s both private and impressive, perfect for your trip to the backcountry of Tanzania. The décor in your tent creates a serene space in shades of ecru, purple, coral and chocolate brown. The en-suite bathroom has a bucket shower, hand basin and flush toilet.

With so much natural beauty to enjoy around you, we recommended spending some quiet moments between game drives relaxing on your private veranda in the safari-style chairs. Have a glass of wine or spirits while listening to the murmur of wildlife in the evening, and awaken slowly the next morning with a cup of tea or coffee.

If you’re planning a
honeymoon safari, Mara Under Canvas is a wonderful place for romantic couples looking at affordable, quality bush accommodation in Serengeti Park. Solo travelers, families and small groups spending their holidays exploring East Africa are also quite comfortable at the safari camp. The common areas include a dining tent separate from the lounge tent. Relax and play board games or read books from the mini-library in the lounge area.

Safari At Mara Under Canvas

With the Mara River practically at your doorstep, all the excitement, anticipation and thrills of the wildebeest migration is only a short distance away. Game drives are offered twice a day — once in the early morning and once in the late afternoon or optionally as a full-day excursion. The schedule of the drives mirrors animal activity, as during other times of day, the wildlife — especially predators — are normally resting in secluded shady spots. Meet your guide after a bit of coffee and tea and set out into the landscape of Serengeti National Park, always a highlight for even the most experienced traveler.

Your expert guide takes you across the terrain in a special 4x4 safari vehicle, while offering an amazing knowledge of details about the Serengeti. You’ll be in awe when you arrive at prime vantage points for the Mara River crossing and other wildlife sites in the park. A late-day game drive gives you a second superb perspective on the park and the behavior of its animals.

After the day’s excitement, you’ll return to camp for sundowner cocktails, fruit, roasted cashews and other snacks around the campfire. The sun sets below the horizon, and a delicious dinner is served in the mess tent after you have freshened up. As your energy flags, return to your tent for quiet conversation about your extraordinary holiday before turning in for a well-earned good night’s sleep. To add another dimension to your visit the next day, AfricanMecca can also arrange a hot air balloon ride over the park in the early morning hours just before sunrise.

Dining At Mara Under Canvas

Aromatic coffee and tea awakens you to a glorious dawn, setting the tone for your incredible vacation in the most iconic ecosystem in Tanzania. Safari activities definitely build an appetite, and the chefs of Mara Under Canvas strive to serve deliciously satisfying food, sourcing organic produce, meats, baked goods and more for fresh and tasty meals.

In the morning after your high-paced wildlife tour, enjoy a spread of cereals, fruits, eggs, toast and more. Lunch time is a celebration of flavorful meats, cheese, breads, pasta, fruits and other locally sourced foods. Afternoon tea includes scrumptious cookies to prepare you for a late-day activity.

After sundowners, step into the dining tent to find a romantic setting of glowing lanterns, understated charm and delightful deep-pink napkins shaped like flamingos. Evening gastronomical delights are carefully prepared by the camp chef. Afterwards, join other guests around the campfire for cognac and storytelling by guests, staff and guides. Retire to your tent, crawl into bed and fall asleep listening to the sounds of the natural world.

  2. Meal options may not suit the palates of some guests who prefer an extended variety of menu items. If you have specific dietary requests, do let us know.
  3. The free Wi-Fi has limitations on guest use – additional use is available for a supplemental fee.
  4. Only primary activities are available at this camp (i.e., game drives) – nature walks are not offered due to the location within the Serengeti National Park.
