HORSEBACK TOURS IN TANZANIA

Are You Planning An Equestrian Safari To Tanzania? Scroll Down For Details..

A discerning horseback safari in Africa is an elevated challenging way to feel at one with the landscape, the wildlife and the indigenous people. Through AfricanMecca Safaris, you can choose your equestrian itinerary and the hours you spend on the saddle. All riding tours in Tanzania are conducted in private reserves as the national parks do not allow horses or riding them within its boundaries.

For horse lovers, the advantages of isolation and riding immersion in private conservancies outweigh the convenience of jeep safaris in public parks. It may take longer to track the animals you want to see, but when you find them, you will be alone except two to six other riders. Most riding stables conduct their own assessment and questionnaires before a rider takes out a horse.

Bush riding is usually relaxed, but there is always the possibility of surprises and the tempting prospect of fast gallops over the never-ending plains of Grumeti Reserves in the Serengeti ecosystem, suburbs of Manyara and Western Kilimanjaro – South of Amboseli, keeping up with a tower group of giraffe or herds of zebra, antelope, and even the Great Migration of the wildebeest when in western Serengeti.

The long-necked gerenuk with its propeller-like ears is readily visible from horseback, and elephant can be approached strategically, but it is wiser to keep your distance from predators. Only strong intermediate and advanced riders, confident and in control, are encouraged to take riding holidays with long hours in the saddle. Riders must weigh less than 100 kilos/ 220 pounds, and children must be over 14 years of age.

Horse safaris last several days with different nightly camps, such as those from Singita Sasakwa Lodge using its in-house Equestrian Center on 350,000 acres of the Singita Grumeti Reserves in Serengeti west, a premier boutique accommodation, Lake Manyara Ranch Tented Camp, a deluxe safari base, or Kaskazi Horse Safaris, a budget value option using fly camp tents and focusing on the exhilaration of riding without fences rather than on wildlife. Day rides may be requested in advance subject to availability of guides and horses, and on the assessed skill of the rider. Luxury camps and lodges provide alternative activities for non-riders and shorter horseback excursions for less experienced riders.

Equestrian safaris are best booked from June to October, inclusive. There is generally no riding during the rains. On horseback, you can also visit Lake Natron, unbelievable breeding site of millions of flamingos in a hauntingly desolate landscape, or a riding trip to the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, through tropical forests of arresting beauty and outlying coffee plantations of the Chagga people.

Ride through the Maasai Steppe for cultural contact with the proud, red-robed cattle herders. Horse riding is also available on the Ngorongoro highlands at the country and farmland estate at The Manor and in the outskirts of the Tarangire at Chem Chem Safari Lodge. Whatever your interests, budget and companions, AfricanMecca can arrange a Tanzania horseback vacation to suit you.
