Serengeti National Park offers guests a unique bush holiday experience in the backcountry of Tanzania. Year-round, resident species engage in an ongoing battle of life and death — but the Great Migration is when this dynamic is charged with even more energy. The scene from July to September is beyond spectacular, as you feel completely immersed in the struggle of wildebeests and zebras as they dodge the snapping jaws of ravenous crocodiles. Should the herbivores survive the grips of the predators, the river may carry away the youngest and weakest, or they may be overcome physically and emotionally by the strain of exertion.
Located in the faraway corner of northern Serengeti National Park is the little remote getaway of Kaskaz Mara Camp. This deluxe accommodation offers 10 guest tents, including one honeymoon suite for the special couple’s romance time together on safari. Parents with children who are least five years old are welcome, and we can arrange family safari activities to safely engage youngsters in the exploration of the Tanzanian bush.
Accommodation At Kaskaz Mara Camp
Each tent features a private shaded patio area with furnishings for those cool mornings and warm afternoons when you simply want to relax and watch wildlife in privacy. Inside is a sleeping area and an ensuite bathroom. After a day of game drives and other activities, you can relax in a comfortable bed, turn on the bedside lamp on the nightstand, and read your favorite book until you drift into a deep, peaceful sleep. Mosquito netting covers the zip-open windows so you can allow breezes in without worrying about mosquitos and other pests. Cotton drapes are included to provide the utmost privacy.
The ensuite bathrooms offer ample space for showering and dressing, as well as double vanity with twin ceramic basins, mirrors, towel racks, shelving, a flush toilet, and a bucket shower. With advance notice, Kaskaz Mara Camp can accommodate guests with limited mobility on tours, though we do request that you advise us of this requirement as early as possible in your planning of a visit to Serengeti Park. The camp offers a main tent with lounge and dining area, and WiFi is available. Power is provided via solar and generator, and guests have access to charging stations.
Safari At Kaskaz Mara Camp
Kaskaz Mara Camp is your perfect base for watching the heart-pounding action during the Great Migration, and the Northern Serengeti is the site of the most sought-after scene that unfolds during this event of nature: the crossing of the Mara River. Days before the wildebeests decide to cross the river, they may mingle nervously among the few grasses that remain. Then, without any obvious reasoning, the herd plunges down the steep embankment and frantically rushes into the river. Soon you understand their hesitation and ultimate panic as sly crocodiles leap out of the water to capture fresh prey.
The Mara River crossing in Serengeti National Park is the most popular wildlife travel activity because the spectacle is unimaginable. It’s almost as if a nature documentary is unfolding right before your eyes. The northern Serengeti offers much more, though. Guided nature walks give you a new perspective of the bush, and you may come upon elephants, giraffes, hippos, and other herbivores. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas are always close at hand. Should you have additional time in your dream trip, we recommend a hot air balloon safari and cultural visit to meet some of the native tribes of Tanzania.
Dining At Kaskaz Mara Camp
Throughout the property, Kaskaz Mara Camp is designed with an understated elegance that may be unexpected in a mid-range accommodation in Tanzania. The décor of the dining room is warm and inviting, with upholstered chairs made of local wood, soft lighting, accents of rich burgundy, and gorgeous wood buffets and cupboards.
The chef can prepare a bush breakfast to take on your morning game drive, or you can return to camp for a larger selection of warm dishes. Lunch is available as a picnic basket or buffet in the dining area. At the end of your afternoon game drive in northern Serengeti, enjoy the authentic wilderness vacation tradition of sunset cocktails before joining other guests for a four-course dinner.

What We Like About Kaskaz Mara Camp
- Kaskaz Mara Camp is a small accommodation with only 10 tents, including a honeymoon suite. The staff are superb and the interactions with the managers are personable.
- Guests enjoy an authentic canvas tent safari experience.
- The camp is set up in a good location with views of the plains and traversing wildlife.
- Guests appreciate the culinary creations by the chef, especially the unexpected samplings in the lunch boxes for game drives.
- Kaskaz Mara has upper mid-range prices for a balance between quality and quantity.
Things To Note When Staying At Kaskaz Mara Camp
- The camp is suited to all travelers including families.
- This is not a 100% ‘green’ camp as it uses generator and solar power.
- It does not have a river-side location like other camps near the migration crossing points.
- Some tents are further from the mess tent due to camp layout – guests with limited mobility should request tents closer to the central area.
- The closest airstrip (Kogatende) is approximately 40 to 45 minutes from the camp, and Lobo Airstrip is 1.5 hours from the camp.
