Bordering the Udzungwa Mountains National Park in the Kilombero Valley, southern Tanzania, is one of the very few reliable value tourist accommodation in Tanzania, Udzungwa Forest Camp, where you listen to the sounds of the rainforest while sleeping under a dense canopy of trees. Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a unique Tanzania hiking safari destination where you get to see a side of Africa that few people know exists or venture out to. The rainforest and animals are never far away, and at night you listen to the sounds of tuskers passing by your tent on their Ruaha-Mikumi migratory path, and bush babies calling out from the trees. The camp, also know as Hondo Hondo, was built with the help of local communities, and today, they remain actively involved with the operations. The primary goal of the camp is to raise awareness of the pristine wilderness of Udzungwa Park while maintaining a small human footprint on nature. As you plan your equatorial holiday to Tanzania, choose from an en-suite tented room bookable via AfricanMecca or traditional mud banda for independent backpackers, all with uncomplicated beds, and you can feel confident that you will be provided with friendly service, tasteful food and an excellent place to begin your hiking, bicycling and camping activities within and around the park.

Accommodation At Udzungwa Forest Camp

You enjoy a deep and peaceful sleep under the forest canopy during your exploratory tour of Udzungwa Park while staying at Udzungwa Forest Camp. The camp offers en-suite tented rooms and traditional bandas to suite your budget requirements. The six tented rooms are situated near the forest and are built from renewable local materials, such as coconut wood and bamboo, to blend perfectly with the stunning jungle setting. For your Udzungwa Forest Camp tour of the national park, you have all of the comforts of home, such as a small writing table with chair, bed with spring mattress, feather pillows, throw blankets that are woven by the Ifakara Women Weavers Group as a community project, and full bathroom with open air shower, flush toilet, ample solar heated water and sink. On cloudy days when solar energy is not available to heat your water, a raised bucket shower of hot water ensures that you will never have a cold shower. Each tent also features solar lighting, charging station and shaded veranda with deck chairs and small table. Udzungwa Forest Camp also offers Wi-Fi service in the lobby. Set amongst a group of teak trees is the camp's five mud thatched huts, a more appropriate backpacker option for your independent trip to Udzungwa Mountains. The bathrooms are shared and outside. AfricanMecca does not utilize the mud huts for its clientele; instead, it opts for the basic tented room to ensure minimal standards are met as a Tier 3 accommodation.

Safari At Udzungwa Forest Camp

Being in such close proximity to the rainforest means that you can choose from several unique activities for your active-adventure holiday in Africa, such as hiking, bicycling, fly camping and cultural tours. Hiking tours may be arranged via AfricanMecca for half-day, full-day and multi-day excursions that take you into the forest and surrounding landscape. Most of the trails in the national park take you to breathtaking and serene waterfalls, such as Sanje Trail, Njokamoni Trail, Sonjo Trail, Prince Bernhard's Falls Trail, and Msolwa Trail. If you prefer a more interactive hike, you may choose the Sanje Mangebys hike where you use radio communication to track and observe a group of unique monkeys that have been habituated to humans. The longest hike, though, is the six to seven hour Hidden Valleys Trail that ascends almost 4,300 feet, taking you through surreal forests of moss-covered trees, a spectacular experience for your African mountainous tour. Half-day and full-day bicycling excursions are another way to explore the surrounds of the national park, and many of the activities can be enjoyed by walking, driving or cycling, such as the two-hour Mangula Village Cultural Tour, half-day Rubber Plantation Tour, half-day Magombera Forest Trip. You may also partake in a dugout canoeing excursion on the Kilombero River, or if you prefer activities that are more adventurous, opt for rock climbing, waterfall abseiling and fly camping that includes an overnight stay during the Sanje hike or a four to six days camping experience on the Lumemo Trail (view map of Udzungwa Mountains). The camp also offers rental equipment, such as tents, bedding, foam mattresses, cooking kits and much more so that you do not have to bring your gear to enjoy these overnight camping activities. The camp also host several activities, such as traditional "Ngoma" drumming performances, birding, nocturnal bug spotting, eco-power tour and smaller nature trails.

Dining At Udzungwa Forest Camp

After your day's activities, return to the camp for a refreshing cocktail from the bar and gather with family and friends for conversation as evening sets in. The abundance of food continues with an incredible three-course dinner of delicately battered vegetables, potato croquettes, pepper steak, pasta, vegetarian options and many other dishes that you would not expect to have during your budget safari in Africa. The camp takes great pride in providing satisfying food, so please let AfricanMecca know ahead of time if you have any special dietary needs.
