GUIDE ON SPEKE'S CAMP IN KENYA
A secluded grassy-bushy in the between the Mara North Conservancy with the adjoining Olare Motorogi Conservancy, dotted with verdant trees, at a short distance from the Olare Orok River, is the location of the economical Speke’s Camp. A small collection of canvas tents, the campsite occupies a tract of land leased from the Maasai and operates on eco-friendly principles in accordance with their deep reverence for nature. The camp is semi-permanent in nature which means that there are no fixed structures, except for the concrete flooring. When you stay at this modest camp on your personalized vacation in Africa, you will be struck by the tranquil charm of the camp and delighted at its proximity to some of the most game-rich locales of Masai Mara National Reserve. Visit the Talek River that is famous for its frequent leopard sightings, Paradise Plains, Rhino Ridge and Musiara Marsh. Using the camp as a base, you can trek to Jan’s Camp in Loita Hills for five to ten days along well-worn trails that talk to you of an age-old mysticism created by ancient Maasai footprints. Back at Speke’s, AfricanMecca guests can spend time in their lounge tent that also doubles as an indoor dining area with a homely bar in one corner. Its safari ambience is evident in the colorful woven rugs, light-weight chairs and dining furniture that has an ethnic air about it. You could also relax in the quaint daybeds arranged under the trees, and as the sun sheds a golden light over Masai Mara on its journey to the western horizon, you can settle around a campfire and sip sundowners as you relive every exciting moment of the day on your Masai Mara Reserve tour. Later, enjoy a hearty meal lighted by the fire under a velvety blanket of African stars. Speke’s Camp only has 8 guest tents, each located in an individual copse of trees so you can have seclusion while enjoying your stay during your trip in Kenya. Some of the tents have a double bed while others are furnished with either single twin beds or two queen size beds in a family tent. A wooden safety chest and collapsible closet are perfect for unpacking while the seating area on the outdoor patio allows you to spend quiet afternoons just reveling in the serenity of the pristine wilderness around you. Solar panels generate the power to light the lamps hung from the ceiling of your tent, and the en-suite bathroom at the back comes with twin vanity basins and sectioned off shower cubicle for warm, bucket showers. To allow for authentic low-density tourism experience in the quieter areas of the Masai Mara conservancies while keeping prices affordable, Speke's Camp in partnership with its Maasai community landowners is built on private Maasai community land and offers its game drives in the public reserve, allowing it to have the best of both experiences. As you travel in the Masai Mara Reserve (view map) in a custom-built safari vehicle, you will learn about the wonder of the Great Wildebeest Migration that thunders across the plains in the months from July to October. You could also be privileged to witness this amazing spectacle along with the stunning plethora of mammals from royal lions to elegant giraffes and also over 450 species of birdlife. Your Maasai guide regales you with tales from his childhood to his warriorhood when he grew up around the wildlife and learned about their habitat and behavior from first-hand experiences. Visit his village to watch traditional ceremonies, fire making, cattle milking, bead fashioning, handcrafting weapons and so much more. An optional balloon safari is other thrilling adventures you can go on while nature holidaying at Speke’s Camp with AfricanMecca.
