GUIDE ON KICHECHE MARA CAMP IN KENYA
A secluded valley amidst the Mara North Conservancy houses the Kicheche Mara Camp where copses of acacia trees shelter spacious, deluxe tents as the Olare Orok water-stream flows close by. Zebras, impalas, topis and dik diks graze on the grasses outside your tent, and when you wake one morning on your wondrous East African nature vacation, you might also chance to see lion or leopard paw prints on the soil around your tent. The camp comprises of canvas structures with netted windows erected on a flattened surface covered with a tarp. The wilderness-facing lounge embraces you in the spirit of Africa with its colorful wall hangings with ethnic motifs, woven rugs, wildlife photos and cultural curios. Traditional lanterns light up the lounge at night that also has a bookcase fashioned out of rough-hewn wood standing on one side. Choose a book that will introduce you to the astounding plethora of wildlife you will be viewing as you adventurously tour the Masai Mara National Reserve. Revel in the warm, generous nature of your Maasai hosts on your stay in their camp where there are only 8 canvas tents, each partly veiled around trees and bushes. A guard patrols at all times and escorts you around the camp, so you feel benign despite the camp being unfenced with wildlife moving around freely. Enjoy views of the Mara outback from the patio outside your tent where a rock hyrax might choose to investigate you. The tents have either a roomy double bed or twin beds. If you are traveling in Kenya in a group of three, a third bed can be setup. Via your AfricanMecca tour planner, parents with two children can request the family tent that has a double bed and two single beds in the same tent. Open racks accommodate your things while the spoor of cedar emanating from the wooden furniture adds a safari mood to your nights as you fall asleep to the sounds of buffaloes and elephants munching around the campgrounds. You tent also has an en-suite bathroom complete with bathrobes, twin basins and a curtained-off shower stall where you can experience hot bucket showers on your authentic African bush holiday. Your meals at the Kicheche Mara are all a part of your delectable safari adventure. You can have them at the camp shaded by acacia trees beside the river during the day or under a blanket of the twinkling stars of Mara North. The camp can also arrange for you to have picnic meals in the bush so you can stay out all extended game drives exploring the scintillating wilderness. From the months of July through October, you could view the awesome phenomenon of the Masai Mara wildebeest and zebra migration as they follow their centuries-old path across the plains. The Mara is also host to the Big Five of Africa and more than 450 species of birds (read more on the best time to visit Masai Mara wilderness in south-western Kenya). Discover their nests cleverly hidden in the shrubs and learn to identify which bird or reptile hatched out of eggshells you see. Your naturalist guide also shows you the traditional animal tracking systems of the Maasai. Later you could visit their village for more insights into their age-old culture. As you cruise along in your custom-equipped safari vehicles, your experienced guide lets you in on the many secrets of the reserve and its many denizens. Balloon safaris are another adventure you can add to your Masai Mara Game Reserve avian trip with AfricanMecca where you float over the land marveling at its many wonders.
