Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

Perched at 7,500 feet, conveniently located on the western crater rim, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge commands stunning crater floor views from every room. Once a government owned lodge and the first constructed lodge on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, it projects a memorable “Art-Deco meets Africa” experience. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro Crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania was formed over 2 million years ago. It is the largest volcanic caldera in the world. Its unbroken rim drops 2000 feet to 100 square miles of grassy plains, woodlands, lakes and marshes. For budget-conscious, adventurous souls who seek convenience and unspecific character, a Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge Safari offers unbeatable opportunities to enjoy spectacular scenery and unrivalled game-viewing in widely varied habitats. Steep facing crater walls are hung with forest and protect a unique ecosystem, with lush grass and year-round water. This makes the crater a paradise for grazing herbivores, for the predators who prey on them, and for hundreds of Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge guests who emanated on a holiday to Tanzania to marvel at the spectacular diversity of wildlife to be found here: from ubiquitous wildebeest, zebra and lions to rare black rhinoceros. Here, the Rosy-Breasted Longclaw arrives with the rains; the gigantic Lammergeyer carries carrion bones high on thermal air currents to drop and crack them on rocky slopes; Ostriches can be found trotting and scurrying on the plains during your AfricanMecca game drive on the crater floor.

Accommodation At Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge has 80 rooms, all centrally heated, heavily furnished in wood and leather with large windows overlooking the crater. Quirky features such as rhino-shaped door handles, massive ornamental wall areas, and glass bead curtains add character to its somewhat tired decor. But the facilities are more than adequate for a value trip in Ngorongoro Crater, featuring a jumbo-sized lounge with panoramic views and cheerful central fireplace, opening onto an observation-deck terrace with strategically placed, giant, binoculars reminiscent of a sea-side pier. A monolithic drive-through huge hotel-style entrance conducts you to an impressive lodge building. The cave-like reception area boasts picture windows giving onto a magnificent crater view. There rooms have a mix of double and twin beds with interconnecting rooms for families on safari with AfricanMecca. Decades back, many well-known visitors have enjoyed the hospitality of the Presidential suite on their Tanzanian safari when no other accommodation existed on the crater rim (explore more on where to stay in Ngorongoro). Extra services include same or next day laundry (weather dependent) and child-minding on request as well as an on-site nurse. There is a boutique, stocking ethnic items, gifts and souvenirs of travel In Africa. Radio and telephone are available, and there is a TV lounge and library. Services and activities are set to a timetable and are basic and inflexible.

Safari At Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

Without a doubt, the favorite activities are game-viewing drives in 4x4 safari vehicles, driven by knowledgeable and experience AfricanMecca guides who share and exchange fauna intelligence by radio to its preferred contemporaries on current sightings of special interest, which include general big game predators as well as the rare black rhino. Half of wildebeest and zebra found here never join the Great Migration, meeting their grazing needs within the crater where they provide food for predators including large prides of genetically inbred lion. Cheetahs and leopard are sometimes spotted, but handsome serval cats are plentiful. There is a rich variety of giant birds of prey, including Kori Bustard, Verreaux's Eagle and Egyptian Vulture. By the lakes and marshes you will see flocks of lesser and greater pink flamingos, iconic images of Ngorongoro Crater tours. Other African holiday activities outside the crater might include a visit to a Maasai village where groups of women chant as they make traditional handcraft items. Some evenings, there are displays of dancing and music at the lodge, as well as film shows, talks and wildlife videos. When visiting the villages in the conservation area, you may also encounter Maasai herdsmen seeking to pasture their cattle. It is an exhilarating, fun, African cultural safari experience. During your tour in Tanzania from Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, a fascinating day excursion to the Olduvai Gorge will provide evidence of human habitation almost four million years ago in the so-called “Cradle of Mankind”.

Dining At Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

After a morning wake-up cuppa of fine Tanzanian tea or Arabica coffee, you may enjoy a full English breakfast in the dining room before savoring a magical misty morning game drive down through the forest onto the Ngorongoro crater floor with incredible concentrations of wildlife. This is arguably the richest and smallest game-viewing area in all Africa, with large populations of lion, elephant, and herbivores on the grasslands and waterbuck, buffalo and hippopotamus in the wetlands. But you will not find giraffe here as the fever-tree woodlands do not afford them palatable grazing. Lunch can be taken during the six-hour drive, at designated viewing sites, or you can eat later, at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, on your return from your crater floor guided game drive with AfricanMecca. Sundowners are served around indoor fireplace in the early evening where you can exchange stories of your tour of Africa. A vast open dining room features space-heaters and leather settles amongst rock, wood and ethnic touches. Service is buffet-style with a wide choice of dishes, from international gourmet to local dishes, including delicious soups, varied salads, succulent grills, rich roasts, cheeseboard, fruit and a fine range of delicious puddings and desserts. As far as possible, food is locally sourced from areas surrounding the crater. The relaxing Rhino Lounge Bar is the place to enjoy a wide range of wines, spirits, cordials and cocktails whilst drinking in the view overlooking the gray rock caldera rim extending under a white cloud fringe above a vista of green lawn plain with its central azure lake.

When staying at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge in Ngorongoro Crater (Rim & Forest Areas), we recommend combining it with your Northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Serengeti (wildebeest migration). End your trip with a Swahili cultural tour and beach holiday in Zanzibar.

You may optionally extend out to offbeat parks in Southern and Western Tanzania such as Selous, Ruaha or Katavi ending with a chimpanzee trekking safari at Gombe or Mahale by the relaxing Lake Tanganyika.
