GUIDE ON NAMIRI PLAINS (ASILIA AFRICA) IN SERENGETI

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Namiri Plains

As you imagine your ideal safari with AfricanMecca, consider the plains of Namiri in Serengeti National Park, where the eastern short grasslands welcome the different shades of umbrella acacia trees. For more than 20 years, the area was the site for research of Africa’s fastest big cat: cheetahs. Today, this section of Serengeti is also well known for other feline carnivores that are frequently sighted, from lions to leopards. In fact, lions have been known to wander through the camp on occasion. Noteworthy wildlife activity includes eastern pockets of the Great Migration from November to June (best time to visit) with increased thrilling predator sightings, and one of Africa’s highest concentrations of hyenas during the rains.

Thanks in part to an underground water source (Ngare Nanyuki), the Namiri Plains maintains a small population of resident species — herbivores, avi-fauna, and carnivores alike. Even better, all of the spectacular wildlife activity and stunning natural beauty is almost completely yours alone to enjoy, as this section of Serengeti is visited by very few people year-round. There are no other camps or lodges within the area, and the closest one is 60 minutes away.

Located in a distinct eastern section of Serengeti, Namiri Plains is a premier tented camp for those who seek a secluded wildlife holiday in pristine and exclusive surroundings.

Accommodation At Namiri Plains

Namiri Plains by Asilia Africa offers ten luxury tents shaded by iconic acacia trees, including one for families, and also one for honeymooners seeking safari romance in the wild. The classic interiors features elegant elements, such as wood accents set against a palette of wood brown, beige, ecru, taupe, and gold. Furnishings in the sleeping area include double or twin beds, an armchair, shelving, nightstands, and decorative lighting. You also have an in-tent lockbox for your valuables.

The ensuite bathrooms feature traditional bucket showers, flush toilets, vanities with long horizontal mirrors, and vessel wash basins. The extended bordering part of the room tent includes a charming sitting area with a tray table, reclined canvas chairs, and interior armchairs. This private verandah invites you to relax and gaze out across the plains and observe the many East African species that are the centerpiece of your thrill-seeking
travels in Tanzania.

Although the tents are somewhat intimate, the layout and design is quite brilliant. Privacy is well-preserved, as the tents are situated 15 to 20 meters apart. Should you prefer to sleep amid traversing wildlife, we recommend a tent that is located further from the common areas. Guests with limited mobility should stick to tents closer to the common areas. Families who are in Tanzania for a classic wilderness safari tour with their children, though, may prefer the family tent closer to the dining area and other shared facilities. The staff strives to provide each and every guest with attentive care and ensure in-room amenities are available on demand in the workings of a remote area. Electricity is provided via solar power and an on-demand generator.

Safari At Namiri Plains

Namiri Plains offers game drive  activities into the Serengeti safari ecology twice each day — once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Full-day game drives options are available, too. The schedule coincides with times when the animals are most active, and the temperatures are most comfortable for our guests. The eastern section of Serengeti is little-visited, so you can look forward to a complete sense of isolation while your guide expertly traverses the terrain.

Along the way, you’ll see the iconic giants of Africa — massive herds of elands mingling with Thomson's gazelles, zebras, and other herbivores. Your guide will draw your attention to the rocky areas that edge the savannah where lions lounge, the tall grasses that hide crafty cheetahs, the lone trees where leopards are known to rest, and many other hiding places of the diverse predators found in Serengeti.

In the evening, venture back out with your guide for an intense trip to locate East Africa’s nocturnal species and end the adventure with sunset cocktails. Return to camp for dinner and gather with other guests around the campfire before retiring to your tent. We can also arrange a walking safari to give you an intimate perspective of the smaller habitats of the great Serengeti. On of the early morning during your visit, you can opt for the optional balloon safari over the Serengeti plains.

Dining At Namiri Plains

The rising sun paints the African landscape with a warm, golden hue to create a romantic and breathtaking vacation experience. Namiri Plains offers optional sunrise picnic breakfasts on one of the outstanding natural landmarks — Soit Le Motonyi Rock. Most breakfasts, though, are served in the dining tent after you return from game-seeking in the bush. Traditional dishes are served, including cereal, toast, eggs, potatoes, fruit, muffins, pancakes, and much more — all accompanied by tea, coffee, and other beverage choices.

Lunch is another opportunity to sample locally sourced food such as cheese, chicken, beef, vegetables, fruits, and other enjoyable selections. As the afternoon transitions to night, your guide takes you to a wonderful vantage point on a rocky outcrop where you find a crimson red blanket laid out and a selection of wines and cocktails prepared for you. The setting sun is a stunning backdrop for watching the fauna prepare for the night.

Back at camp, the chef prepares a three-course meal of starter, varied meats (steak, fish, or chicken), vegetables, salads, pasta, and other excellent options. There’s also dessert, and you’ll certainly be delighted to find a bowl of ice cream, cake, or other sweets placed before you — the preparation of which is a true culinary feat in the remote wilderness of Tanzania.

Things To Note When Staying At Namiri Plains

  1. With only 10 tents, we recommend booking 12-18 months during the peak eastern migration season.
  2. Outside the eastern migration period, the prime sites for viewing game require long drives to central Serengeti.
  3. This is a remote location that requires a 75-minute drive from the nearest airstrip i.e. Seronera.
  4. Namiri Plains is not a 100% green camp as it uses solar and generator power.
  5. The camp suited to all travelers and not family-focused — it doesn’t offer activities specifically for families and children.
