GUIDE ON SHIMBA HILLS LODGE IN KENYA
Escape into the forest of Shimba Hills National Reserve at the 67-room modest accommodation of Shimba Hills Lodge. This economical African wilderness travel accommodation offers standard rooms and suites to fit the needs of every budget-conscious guest. The small standard rooms provide you with the basic necessities you need while keeping you close to all the action in the reserve. The room décor is clean and minimalistic to keep your attention on the pristine bush that is just outside your room. Simply walk through the sliding glass doors, and the forest envelops you with refreshing temperatures, colorful birdlife and outlandish sounds of varied creatures in the trees and bush. The twin beds have mosquito netting, and the ceiling fan and mineral water keep you cool and refreshed during your equatorial trip to Shimba Hills Reserve. Your room does not have an en-suite bathroom, but the shared bathroom is easily accessed at the corridors close to your room. For AfricanMecca guests who need more space and privacy, Shimba Hills Lodge offers two large suites, each with king size bed with a small lounge area, mini bar, tea and coffee maker and en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower. A private balcony is accessed from your suite through sliding glass doors, and the views include the watering hole and rainforest. The suites are great small families, as well as couples who are planning a non-frill romantic African wildlife vacation.
Start your day with an action-packed Kenya photo safari drive traveling across the vast bushland of the reserve in the comfort of a specially-designed safari vehicle. You are joined by an expert guide with an intimate knowledge of the reserve, flora and fauna. Your guide’s experience greatly increases your chances of seeing many highly-desired species and perhaps the rare sable or roan antelope for which the reserve is known for. As an alternative morning activity, your AfricanMecca Safaris representative can pre-arrange a bush breakfast. Your guide takes you to Makadara viewpoint for an adequate morning meal before you journey into the bush on a guided nature walk. Should you prefer to have breakfast at the lodge, you can enjoy your meal while watching the wildlife at the watering hole. Spend the remainder of your day napping, reading and journaling and taking time to enjoy a satisfying lunch. Before your afternoon game drive, we recommend that you take local cultural tours of Kenyan Digo and Duruma villages. These tours give you insight into the lives and traditions of local tribes. For an adventurous holiday excursion in Shimba Hills Reserve (view map), we also recommend a hike to Sheldrick Falls, although the hike may be strenuous for guests with limited fitness and mobility (read more on when is the best time to go to Shimba Hills). For an extraordinary afternoon, we can also arrange a game drive followed by sundowners. Once the sun sets, return to Shimba Hills Lodge for an interesting discourse with your naturalist and a modest dinner.
