GUIDE ON ISLAND CAMP BARINGO IN KENYA
A deep sense of peace embraces you as you take a short 15-minute boat ride to Island Camp Baringo, a mid-range accommodation situated on the southern end of Ol Kokwe Island at the center of Lake Baringo. The picturesque setting is ideal for photographers, birders and guests who want a one-of-a-kind holiday in Kenya with AfricanMecca. As the second oldest camp in Kenya, Island Camp Baringo has a long history of treating guests to excellent service that enhances any ideal African lake vacation. The property is perfectly suited for guests who prefer a sense of isolation and privacy amidst a breathtaking landscape. Stone pathways lead you to one of the charming 23 clean and well-maintained thatched-roof guest cottages that are available in twins, doubles or triples. You take a moment to immerse yourself in the spectacular views of Lake Baringo from your private veranda before stepping inside your peaceful cottage. The open canvas front and side windows allow natural light to fill your Deluxe Cottage, creating a soothing atmosphere that is complemented by natural stone floors, earth tones and beautiful wood fused metalwork bed canopied with mosquito netting that tastefully disguises a trundle bed which is perfect for families on a Great Rift Valley safari. Couples on romantic Lake Baringo safaris may prefer the larger Superior Cottages that feature an open floor plan, private splash pool and a small sitting area. Newlyweds may also prefer the intimate Honeymoon Suite. Guests with limited mobility may find the multi-level property difficult to navigate, and we may recommend other accommodations at the lake for a comfortable and safe travel in the highlands of Kenya. Most of the guest cottages face east, and you awaken to the warmth of the East African sunrise without leaving the comfort of your bed. Upon request, the staff brings you tea, coffee or juice before your morning activity. We highly recommend that you begin your day tour of Lake Baringo with a morning boat ride, as this is when the light is soft, and the setting is quite enchanting. We also recommend that photographers partake of a morning activity for outstanding images of goliath heron, African fish eagles, marabou storks and many of the other estimated 470 species of avi-fauna. AfricanMecca can arrange a lake shore cruise that includes a lakeside breakfast, or you may return to the camp for the equally delectable morning fare. Freshly baked homemade breads are guest favorites, and the hosts encourage the sharing of some delightful morsels with the birds and resident dwarf mongooses. After breakfast, join Island Camp’s birding expert for a leisurely 90-minute walking tour to discover three-banded coursers, spotted thick-knees and other scrub-dwelling birds or return to your cottage to relax. After a buffet lunch, take a quick nap or swim. Enjoy afternoon tea and a late day boating safari to Giraffe Island in Ruko Conservancy, village cultural visit or nature walk on the island to observe giraffes, hippos, impalas and other mammals. Day trips to Lake Bogoria can also be arranged, including a picnic breakfast or lunch. The phenomenal sunsets should not be missed, and sundowners can be arranged on the lake, Look Out Point and Rock of Gibraltar. A delicious plate service dinner gives you time to reflect on your incredible Lake Baringo experience before retiring for the night.
