GUIDE ON RONDO RETREAT IN KENYA
Located in the lush, verdant Kakamega Forest, amidst birds and butterflies is the Rondo Retreat. It has a quaint, colonial charm, reminiscent of the 1940s. Add to that is the church at one end of the garden where AfricanMecca guests can spend time in quiet self-reflection amidst the ambience of peace that fills your senses. Rondo Retreat welcomes forest holidaying guests in Africa as friends rather than visitors. A value accommodation, the lodge is constructed using wooden planks and the individual, yellow-cream white cottages with their corrugated red roofs set on landscaped lawns add to the picturesque country appeal. Their decor is an interesting amalgamation of colonial relics and sepia pictures combined with African art and craft. The living room in the lodge's main house is warm and inviting along with the fireplace further affirming its appeal. Rondo Retreat has five cottages that house 15 rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Each room has a unique charm and comes with a double bed or twin beds with mosquito netting. The main house of the lodge has an additional 3 rooms with a spacious, common bathroom – perfect for a small family. Wide patios outside each of the villas have a ledge on the railing that is the perfect place to place your tray of tea and cakes as you enjoy your serene vacation in Kakamega Forest while viewing the antics of the monkeys in the trees and the colorful butterflies flitting around the flowers. The lodge serves you an intercontinental breakfast, lunch and dinner in their dining area. Candles are lit at dinnertime and if the weather permits, fire is lighted to warm the room. You can opt to have tea in your room, in the lodge lounge or the patio. Though, since Rondo Retreat is also a residential establishment, they do not serve alcoholic drinks. The Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Indigenous Forest Conservation Project have conducted an extensive study of the flora and fauna of Kakamega Forest using Rondo Retreat as a base. Before you begin your exploration of the forest, you could study a copy of the book, "Kakamega Forest, The Official Guide" that has complete details of their findings. With an in-house conservationist guide leading the way, you could initiate your hike in the lower garden of Rondo Retreat. There are a number of trails you could follow leading down to the Yala River and every step has a new discovery to make your safari trip in western Kenya more memorable. Kakamega Forest supports about 40% of the butterfly species of Kenya. You will see Hobart's red gliders, black-tipped diadems, charaxes and many more alighting on the awesome 60 species of orchids and other innumerable flowers. Entomologists will find the stick insects, fireflies and goliath beetles fascinating while bird lovers will be enchanted by the emerald cuckoos, great blue turacos and black and white casqued hornbills. The forest also has a unique flora that is a combination of trees and plants typically found in the higher and lower elevations in Kenya. Black and white colobus, blue Sykes and the elusive deBrazzas monkeys can be seen in the lofty trees festooned with lianas while Duikers, mongooses, genets and servals peek at you from the shrubs. These are only some of the many delightful sights that await you when you tour Kakamega Forest. Check in with AfricanMecca travel planner for more details.
