GUIDE ON THE ARK IN KENYA
The Ark is a distinct value accommodation for guests who want to complement their adventurous bush safaris in East Africa with wildlife viewing experiences from the deck of the lodging. Located in the wild heart of Aberdare National Park, the lodge is strategically situated next to a saltlick watering hole which attracts a variety of fauna. The most prominent animals are elephants, but you may also see buffalos, rhinos, forest hogs and other herbivores. Even leopards, hyenas and other elusive predators come to drink. The lodge design is based upon Noah’s Ark to give you an even more charmed and adventurous trip to Aberdare Park. Observation decks overlook the waterhole and saltlick, and the lounge areas and balconies are perfect for relaxing with a refreshing cocktail while watching the wildlife come and go. Each level of the lodge has its own viewing deck so you can see the animals from a different angle. This design -enhances the images captured by photographers, and the hide bunker gets you only a few meters away from the animals. The staff strive to give every guest a memorable holiday in Kenya, so a nighttime watchman keeps an eye out for nocturnal activity. When an interesting animal is sighted during the night, you are alerted with a special buzzer in your room. The accommodation understands, though that not all AfricanMecca guests wish to be awakened so you can turn off the in-room buzzer as desired. Also, there are some nights when there is no unique wildlife action so there is no buzzing that happens, disappointing to some guests who have high expectations without realizing that the Aberdare is a wilderness arena and not a zoo.On your check-in arrival, your lunch is served at the Aberdare Country Club in Nyeri, after which you proceed to The Ark for a more leisurely game viewing on the viewing decks or on an optional game drive. After your afternoon and evening of watching elephants chase away buffaloes at the watering hole, slumber peacefully in one of the lodge’s 60 guest rooms. The subtle décor calms your mind so that you can rejuvenate for any nighttime activity at the watering-hole, and hot water bottles under your blankets keep the cool evening air at bay. Nocturnal animals may come and go quickly, so you may prefer a room near one of the observation decks. In the morning, open your blinds to allow in natural light and be pleasantly surprised to see gazelles, buffalos and other early visitors just outside your window. An optional morning nature walk after breakfast is a phenomenal way to start your exploratory safari tour of Aberdare, and you may see Colobus and vervet monkeys, avi-fauna and other forest dwellers. Aberdare is a beautiful setting (view park map) that invites you to delve deeper into the lush green expanses, and an afternoon game drive is a chance for you to see animals that may not visit the watering hole. For your sightseeing travels in Kenya’s Aberdare Mountains, AfricanMecca Safaris can arrange half or full day game drives to The Salient and The Moorlands. We also recommend combining your safari vacation stay to Solio Sanctuary. The sanctuary is best known for the successful breeding of black and white rhinos, but you may also see zebra, oryx, giraffe and other herbivores, and possibly even leopards and other elusive predators.
