GUIDE ON CHAKA CAMP IN SERENGETI
Serengeti National Park and its iconic Great Wildebeest Migration (best time) draws intrigued travelers from around the world to the backcountry of Tanzania. The Serengeti ecosystem hosts all the drama of daily battles for food, water, mating rights, territory and so much more. Predators seek prey animals for food, herbivores trudge around the vast plains looking for luscious grasses, and colorful birds soar in the skies overhead. Everywhere you look, Serengeti writes a real-life nature documentary each and every moment. The migration enriches the experience, as over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras thunder across the savannah plains, following an ancient path that takes the animals to the richest grazing sites in the park and beyond onto Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The journey is absolutely thrilling, especially when you watch the event unfold before your very eyes!
Chaka Camp in Serengeti National Park is a great accommodation for guests who seek a deluxe bush holiday in Africa’s most exciting wilderness areas. The mobile camp moves through the Serengeti ecosystem to follow the Great Migration, a natural spectacle that is unmatched on the planet. From December through March, Chaka Camp sets up in Ndutu’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just south of Serengeti Park. From mid-May till the end of October, the camp is located in the northern sector of Serengeti, close to the Mara River. In addition to the breathtaking scenery and wildlife, Chaka Camp offers extremely friendly staff, adequate food and economical guest tents. The camp’s power is provided by solar energy. No matter where you are in the camp, the sounds of Africa can be heard. No matter when you plan your special vacation at Chaka Camp, you always have convenient and strategic access to the wilderness of Africa.
Accommodation At Chaka CampEven the most discerning travelers will be delighted with the guest tents at Chaka Camp in Serengeti National Park. The 11 tents measure thirty two square meters, so you have ample room for your belongings alongside your private shaded verandah for outdoor relaxation. The décor reflects the cultures of Africa, such as handmade fabrics in traditional colors, throw pillows decorated with animal silhouettes, and furniture that was crafted by artists in Arusha. The soft color palette of sage green, taupe, ecru, grey-blue, peach and lavender is inspired by the earthen colors of the African outback.
The beds are very comfortable, and each tent is well-maintained. A natural wood writing desk and electric lighting gives you a private space to read and journal. The en suite bathroom features an open-sided wardrobe, flush toilets and safari showers. The staff provides hot water upon request. Each tent is suited for good views of the bush country of Tanzania. The tents open directly to the golden grasses of the Serengeti ecosystem, which spreads out before you for miles. The canvas flaps close for privacy, and mosquito netting covers each window. Laundry service and drinks are available for an additional fee, and not part of your rooming costs. Chaka’s main area consists of a large tent that houses the dining and lounge areas and a viewing patio, alongside a small bar and library.
Safari At Chaka CampSerengeti National Park is a superb destination for our like-minded guests who choose Chaka Camp for their bush trip. Game drives are the best way to experience the flora and fauna of the park, and AfricanMecca offers morning, afternoon and day-long drives. The guides are very experienced, knowledgeable and personable. The animal behaviors and scenery you’ll see depend on when you stay at the camp. From December through March, when the camp is located in Ndutu, you may visit Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek in addition to viewing the animals of the Great Migration. The area is home to many resident species, such as giraffes, buffaloes, topis, cheetahs, lions and many others, as well as hundreds of avi-fauna species.
In the south of the Serengeti, the plains welcome new life. Each day over a three-week period, over 8,000 wildebeests babies are born and must stand within minutes or be left behind by the herd. The experience is awe-inspiring and heartbreaking at times. From the middle of May to the end of October, the camp migrates further north where the highlight of the game drives is watching the “crossings” of the Mara River. Chaka Camp gives you easy access to one of nature’s greatest shows from July to October. “Action-packed” is the only way to describe the sight of watching the wildebeest migration cross the crocodile-infested Mara River in northern Serengeti! Other activities that can be arranged for you, depending on the time of year, include hot-air balloon safaris above the majestic African wilderness and ranger-guided safari walks. While you’re in Ndutu, we can also offer Maasai cultural tours and tours of Olduvai Gorge. Special activities that are perfect for children are tours of the camp’s bush kitchen and solar system lessons.
Dining At Chaka CampAs a hint of sunlight rises above the horizon each morning, a member of the morning staff brings coffee and tea to your verandah. You have time to sip a warm beverage before meeting with the guide to discuss the day’s plan. Morning game drives allow you to see the Serengeti wildlife making their way to the watering holes or the river and grazing for their first meal of the day. You may even see some of the younger animals playfully engaging as they greet the day. As your tour of the great African bush unfolds, your guide may stop to show you the remains of a lion’s kill, curious paw prints in the soft dirt, and birds of prey circling overhead.
Soon you feel your appetite building, and your guide skillfully traverses the road to take you back to camp, where the chef has been busy preparing breakfast. An assortment of cereals, eggs, baked goods, fresh fruit, waffles and other morning dishes tempt your taste buds. After your mid-morning breakfast, gather in the lounge to read one of the many books, take a quick siesta, or enjoy a refreshing cocktail on your verandah. At midday, another adequate meal is prepared, including platters of meats, vegetables, salads and fruit. Just before your late-day game drive activity, afternoon tea and snacks are served. As the evening sets in, your guide lays out a blanket and prepares sundowners before returning to camp. A tasty dinner is served at camp, either in the separate dining tent or under the African sky, now glittering with starlight. AfricanMecca Safaris can arrange for special meals such as bush breakfasts, picnics and more.

What We Like About Chaka Camp
- Chaka Camp is a deluxe accommodation that offers a balanced safari experience.
- The camp moves with the Great Migration for prime wildlife viewing in two separate wildernesses i.e. north and south.
- This is a small camp with only 11 guest tents including a two-bedroom family tent, affording guests personalized service.
- Chaka Camp operates in excellent locations, with views of the park and traversing wildlife right from the guest tents.
- The staff are upbeat, warm and friendly. Food is good too. Guests can charge camera and phones in their tents.
Things To Note When Staying At Chaka Camp
- We advise our guests that the camp does not operate from April 1 to May 15 and also in November.
- The small size of the camp means that it books quickly during peak season — we recommend reserving this property at least 12 to 18 months in advance.
- Chaka Camp is suited for all travelers including families, honeymooners, solo travelers, small groups etc.
- The locations of the campsite in northern Serengeti is variable each year; therefore, close access to the river is subject to the location of the campsite in the year that it is operating. Not the best camp to stay in when the migration is in the western, central or eastern Serengeti as it does not operate in these areas.
- Wi-Fi is only available in the common areas. Drinks including sundowners and laundry are extra costs even in the game package.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
