SCUBA DIVING TOUR EXPERIENCE IN PEMBA WITH AFRICANMECCA

The pristine condition of the coral reefs around Pemba Island makes it renowned the world over, and underwater explorers of all levels of experience make sure to add a scuba diving tour of Pemba to their holiday itinerary. The waters of the Indian Ocean are optimal for the proliferation of the coral and remain around 75-94 F (24-29 C) degrees dependent on the monsoon season. Their clarity allows easy visibility from 30 to 40 meters when the sun is shining.

Pemba may well be among the least visited diving sites in Eastern Africa due to its lesser accessibility and minimal number of accommodations. You will see an amazing variety of both soft and hard coral that in turn support an equally awesome diversity of marine fauna such as varied triggerfish, frogfish, snapper, leaffish, lionfish, mollusks, seahorse, garden eels, manta rays, eagle rays and many more. Both green and hawksbill turtles are often spotted.

The vegetarian green turtles seem to favor algae and seagrasses while the omnivorous hawksbill turtles are partial to anemones, squids, sponges and shrimp. Among the rainbow of fish, you could also sight napoleon wrasses, barracuda, wahoo, tuna and jacks to name a few, exhilarating sightings that will make your dive vacation with AfricanMecca truly memorable.

The reefs of Pemba Island are characterized by both shallow and deep diving sites with the Pemba channel following a steep incline to the west of the island. Some of the deeper sites can reach depths of more than 100 meters. Your divemaster will accompany you on your expeditions provide guidance to amateurs and seasoned divers, and shares insider tips relevant to diving in the clear waters of Pemba.

There are many dive sites that you can explore on your island trip to Pemba, each with something unique to offer you. The Swiss Reef is a collection of sea hills that run in ranges that may be a couple meters to 100 meters long. There are three main sites here that you can skim over as you sight many oceanic creatures but only recommended to experienced dives. Novice divers can attempt The Shimba Hills which heights at 12 meters between two valley dive sites, perfect to spot triggerfish, sweetlips, fusiliers, barrel sponges and many more.

The Shimba Wall is known for nudibranchs, leaffish and triggerfish among others while The Edge Walls starting at 30 meters, near the Pemba Channel, has strong currents but many delightful inhabitants like the white tip shark, cubera snapper and potato groupers to name a few. The Pole Pole Mountain is suitable for expert divers and must be attempted only during slack tides when the waters are completely calm.

If you are entering the incredible world or diving for the first time, Scorpion's Nest with marine creatures like scorpionfish, giant frogfish and lionfish among the many others, is the ideal spot to inaugurate. The House Reef has many coral bommies and is excellent for night diving while the Njao Gap has five main sites that divers with all levels of experience can attempt. There is also the Fundu Gap with also five sites of many varying levels of depths. These breathtakingly beautiful environs are sure to captivate you, and you will plan many more AfricanMecca dive travels to Tanzania to view them again and again.
