GUIDE ON IKOMA TENTED CAMP IN SERENGETI
Africa travel, past and present, is a host of tales sung in superlatives. In the number and species of wildlife to be seen, Tanzania tours still carry off the crown in this regard. Site of the legendary Great Migration, the immense plain of the Serengeti hosts a horde of a million wildebeest trotting forward in pursuit of the grasslands which grow up after seasonal rain. With a vanguard of hundreds of thousands of zebra and flanked by countless antelope, the migration of wildebeest is pursued by predators and scavengers-lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, vultures, jackals -- making it the grandest and most spectacular procession of its kind in the world. For your safari, selecting Ikoma Tented Camp (aka as Ikoma Bush Camp - part of Moivaro lodges & camps), located along the path of the migration in the western Serengeti, provides an unforgettable vantage point from which to view the parade of prey and predator across the plain. The encampment lies in the Ikoma Wildlife Private Conservancy, about five miles from the headquarters of the Serengeti National Park and just over six miles from the official park entrance. Among AfricanMecca Safaris Serengeti tours, it offers an enviable combination of solid non-frilled value and basic adequate comfort.
Accommodation At Ikoma Tented CampEdged by a grove of acacia tree, Ikoma is an open camp with no fencing or stockade. The encampment consists of 35 varied, sturdy and serviceable canvas tents, all under thatched corrugated roofs and positioned to afford optimal privacy with breath-taking views of the rolling savannah (see details on other accommodation types in Serengeti). Each tented chalet has its own private but basic bathroom with shower, flush toilet, and wash basin. The room is supplied with wash soap, guest towels, mosquito netting, candles and bottled water. The tent has electric lighting, and solar-heated hot water is available. In overall style, Ikoma is simple and unadorned, to better highlight the use of authentic local materials in an eco-friendly way. Especially noteworthy for AfricanMecca Safari guests is the spacious verandah of each of the chalet, placed to give the best views of the encircling landscape. The common areas include a roomy, well-furnished restaurant for sit-down meals and also a tastefully decorated and commodious bar by a central campfire - the ideal place for unwinding at the close of a long and exciting day of tracking and sighting game. Among Tanzania safaris, the atmosphere of Ikoma is relaxed comfortableness amid the spectacular environment of the Serengeti. Besides first class game viewing, an Africa holiday at Ikoma includes also some special chances to interact with local peoples and villages.
Safari At Ikoma Tented CampThe migration season at Ikoma extends from April to June, but there is a large and intriguing variation of game in the area all year round, including lion, leopard, giraffe, buffalo, elephant among other African plains game animals. Because Ikoma Tented Camp has its private concession, unlike some other Africa safari camps and lodges in Serengeti, there are opportunities for walking safaris and night drives, including chances to sight leopard, aardvark, and bat-eared fox. Game drives are taken in custom-designed 4x4 safari vehicles under the direction of experienced AfricanMecca safari guides with radio links, so that each guide may share the latest update on game sightings, tracks, and other information. During morning and evening drives, snacks and refreshments can be ordered and taken with you in your vehicle. Because of its location directly in the path of the migrating wildebeest, during the height of the migration season Ikoma Tented Camp provides easy entrance to the western corridor of the park where, in addition to the lions, leopards and hyenas that trail and pursue them, masses of wildebeest face a sensational and deadly gauntlet of giant crocodiles when crossing the Grumeti River. Also because of location and the concession in the Ikoma area outside the park, Ikoma Tented Camp offers tours of the local Maasai villages, including attending traditional dances and other activities. Among Tanzania vacations, Ikoma Tented Camp is a specific experience for guests looking for an affordable, basic and non-frill accommodation. It offers a delightful and superlative sense of adventure above aesthetics of the rooming in Serengeti trips and at very good value.
Dining At Ikoma Tented CampGood meals are an important part of the Serengeti experience in Tanzania. Dining at Ikoma Tented Camp consists of breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by skilled staff and served under the vaulted thatched roof of the tented restaurant area. Cuisine is a mix of international and local foods, with a wide and delectable selection of soups, salads, and main dishes of meat, poultry, and fish followed by a choice of splendid desserts. Dinners are full sit-down three-course meals with different menus daily – served in buffet style. Both child and vegetarian menus are also served, and staff are happy to respond to guests' special requests though with prior notice. Besides imported wines from all over the world, imported and local beers are offered, as well as a long list of stronger spirits. The meat and milk products and most of the fresh fruits and vegetables are locally sourced. Beverages also include the fine Tanzanian coffee and tea as well as an assortment of soft drinks – both fresh juices and clear and colored carbonated quenchers. By special request, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails in the bush may be arranged, including a full bush dinner with safari chairs at table, with dishes prepared and served on-site by staff. Candle lit dinners and sundowners are a nightly ritual. Both in preparation and in service, dining at Ikoma Tented Camp is a memorable part of the many inimitable experiences of any Tanzania tour with AfricanMecca.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.

When staying at Ikoma Tented Camp in Western Serengeti (Grumeti River Corridor), we recommend combining it with your Northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater. End your trip with a Swahili cultural tour and beach holiday in Zanzibar.
