GUIDE ON GRUMETI MIGRATION CAMP IN SERENGETI
The wildebeest migration in Serengeti National Park is one of the most spectacular events in the natural world, and AfricanMecca is your host. Serengeti is a landscape of vast plains and treacherous rivers, including the Grumeti, where over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras play a game of life or death nearly every moment of the day. The area is also home to an abundance of resident species, making this one of the most amazing destinations any time of year.
If your ideal wildlife travel experience in Tanzania includes seeing the Great Migration, then the Grumeti Migration Camp located within the Wildlife Management Area (WMA) of western Serengeti is an ideal value accommodation to stay in.
Accommodation At Grumeti Migration CampGrumeti Migration Camp is conveniently located in the western sector bordering the Serengeti park, so you can partake of a variety of activities to see the resident and migratory species at almost any time of day. The camp features 20 tents, and inside your tent you will find styled and native fabrics that immerse you in a charming blend of modern and traditional. We have listed Grumeti Migration Camp as a value accommodation due to its location, no-frill experience, and service levels that is primarily suited to guests who prefer budget accommodations. Choose from twins, doubles and triples, so no matter the size of your group, you are assured of a comfortable safari base for exploring the East African bush country of the Serengeti.
Each tent has either a king or twin beds in the premium and deluxe categories. The ensuite bathroom has a flush toilet, sink, vanity, and shower with solar-heated water. When you’re not out on an action-adventure game drive tour of the surrounding habitats, relax on your private verandah and take in the expansive views of the African landscape, complete with numerous fauna species grazing, hunting, and lazing in the sun. The tents are elevated on stone pillars, and each one offers a breathtaking view — but the tents at the front of the property are preferred for spectacular sunrise photography from the verandah. The central area offers a lounge, restaurant, firepit, and swimming pool for those times when you desire the company of other engaging guests. Limited internet access is available for a supplemental fee.
Safari At Grumeti Migration CampAn adventurous bush holiday awaits you at Grumeti Migration Camp! From April to June, you will witness first-hand the incredible, heart-pounding spectacle that is the Great Migration in the Grumeti River area. Over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras traverse the area in search of prime grazing and water. Seeing the massive herds thunder across the plains is sure to delight you on your safari — but the crossing of the Grumeti River is the centerpiece of the experience.
At mid-day, you may desire a quick siesta or a quiet, leisurely guided nature walk. Our guide can also take you on a birding or photography tour in the reserve. Because the camp is located in the private Wildlife Management Area, guests have the chance to partake in a night game drive, an activity that is not allowed in certain parts of the Serengeti National Park. Supplement your dream trip with a cultural experience by visiting a local village of the Maasai tribe to learn more about the native peoples that live within the Serengeti ecosystem. You can go on a hot air balloon safari while staying at Grumeti Migration Camp.
Dining At Grumeti Migration CampStart your day with a lovely cup of coffee or tea before heading out with your professional AfricanMecca guide for a personalized experience in Serengeti National Park! This high-paced trip in the African bush will satisfy your curiosity and inner explorer while building an appetite for a satisfying lunch back at the camp or take a packed lunch for a full day game viewing experience. End your day with sundowners and a delicious dinner of local Tanzanian and western dishes, before gathering around the campfire to share stories of your awe-inspiring wildlife vacation experiences in Tanzania.

What We Like About Grumeti Migration Camp
- Grumeti Migration Camp is an affordable value camp that offers guests a comfortable base for exploring the western Serengeti.
- The guest tents have adequate space and furnishings, and is built on stone stilts.
- Guest tents are spread out on a hillside to provide the most privacy possible.
- Staff is warm and friendly, making the time at the camp an interactive experience.
- This camp is outside the main park, so guests enjoy access to activities that are not allowed inside park boundaries e.g. bush walks and night drives.
Things To Note When Staying At Grumeti Migration Camp
- Food quality is variable and may not suit the palate of every guest.
- The quietest tents are away from the common area. Guests with limited mobility should request tents near the central mess tent.
- This is a budget property. Do not have high expectations of it. The camp is also 45 minutes drive from Ikoma Gate - the entry point into western region of Serengeti Park.
- The most impressive views are from the tents at the higher points of the property, while wildlife viewing is best from the tents at the lower points of the property. If you want a spectacular sunrise view from your tent, choose one at the front of the property.
- Not ideal to stay at when the wildebeest migration is not present in western Serengeti.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
