GUIDE ON OLDUVAI CAMP IN SERENGETI
Serengeti National Park lures expeditionary travelers from around the world because it offers some of the most impressive wilderness experiences in the entire African continent. AfricanMecca Safaris takes you to this pristine wilderness area of Tanzania for an authentic safari experience, where you might see bull elephants tussling for breeding rights, giraffes walking the plains with an elegant gait, wide-jawed hippos protecting their water holes, and lions stalking a fragile young antelope just moments after birth. The adventure, excitement, heartwarming moments and unparalleled energy of this region heighten when immense herds of over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras arrive in southern Serengeti for the calving season, part of the Great Migration.
Located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the south of Serengeti, Olduvai Camp is one of a budget holiday accommodations for guests who desire a game viewing safari activities for observing iconic African species, both small and large.
Accommodation At Olduvai CampBeautifully integrated into a rocky kopje outcrop, Olduvai Camp offers AfricanMecca guests 17 tents that maintain a rustic and organic feel. Each guest tent features a sleeping area, dressing area, ensuite bathroom and outdoor terrace. The warm tones of wood furnishings contrast with natural tone textiles to create a cozy place to relax and rest in between your outdoor activities. The ensuite bathroom is complete with mirror, wash basin, flush toilet and shower with solar-heated water available 24 hours per day.
Nightstands, reading lamps, a floor lamp, luggage racks and a writing desk offer conveniences that you need for a comfortable vacation, while the shaded outdoor terrace immerses you in the natural beauty of the Tanzania bush country. Wander along the stone paths to find the open lounge with free Wi-Fi access and a stocked bar for cocktails and other beverages, or trail up to the smaller lounge for impressive views of the plains from the viewing deck.
Safari At Olduvai CampFor the budget-conscious guest, Olduvai Camp offers a base for primary game viewing activities that takes you into the Serengeti plains to discover its many wonders. The most popular are the guided trips aboard a 4x4 safari vehicle with an experienced guide who knows the best vantage points in the southern plains of Serengeti for observing resident species, as well as the seasonal events of the Great Migration (best time to visit). Game drives are offered in the mornings and afternoons, and each time of day reveals unique animal behaviors and species. Full day option is also available. The mornings are when animals typically come out to drink and graze, while the predators are resting from a night’s hunt or still munching slowly on the remains of a recent kill. In the early evenings, nocturnal species begin to emerge and scrounge for their own tasty morsels, whether that be vegetation or smaller prey animals.
We highly recommend that you spend more than a day at the camp to take part in guided nature walks with Maasai, as well as day trips to Olduvai Gorge, Shifting Sands and Olkarien Gorge, to name only a few of the prime spots with access from the camp. Climbing treks up the area’s volcanoes can also be arranged by your AfricanMecca representative.
Dining At Olduvai CampThe main dining area is exquisitely designed around large granite boulders that have been seamlessly integrated into the décor. It can host up to 40 guests. A smaller dining area is available on top of the kopje for up to 10 guests, offering a great place for romantic dinners and small group gatherings. The chef sources ingredients locally to prepare dishes that satisfy your appetite for a flavorful culinary tour of international and traditional Tanzanian foods.

What We Like About Olduvai Camp
- Olduvai Camp has a good location for access to southern Serengeti plains, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area
- The camp chef often arranges family-style dining for guests to interact with each other over evening meals
- Our guests enjoy the guided walks with Maasai guides, as well as the camp’s proximity to Maasai villages
- Olduvai is a mid-size camp with 17 tents. The camp can accommodate a maximum of 40 guests, and normally full during the peak migration season
- The camp caters to budget guests, and offers a no-frill experience; though, prices are on the higher side
Things To Note When Staying At Olduvai Camp
- The quality and variety of food at the camp may not appeal to every guest’s preferences
- Guest tents are close together, which may not be ideal for those who desire privacy. For guests with limited mobility, we recommend requesting a tent that is close to the main mess tent
- The owners of the Olduvai Camp also have ties to the hunting industry in Tanzania
- The camp is not ideal to stay in when the wildebeest migration is not in the area. Also, it is a windy location
- Charging stations for electronic devices are available only in the main mess tent and are shared by all guests of the camp

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
