GUIDE ON MARA RIVER POST IN SERENGETI
As you plan your much-anticipated safari vacation to the most remote areas of East Africa, Serengeti should certainly be at the top of the list. The Serengeti ecosystem is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest wildlife reserve in the world – and for good reason. This part of Tanzania is home to elephants, hippos, giraffes, antelope, topis, elands, kudus, rhinos and many other herbivores, as well as the ferocious hunters – lions, cheetahs, leopards and others. Over 500 bird species have been identified, so bring along your journal to record all the feathered flyers that you find!
Although northern Serengeti offers an abundance of exciting locations to witness the natural happenings of the bush during your exhilarating safari holiday, the Mara River holds a special place, known primarily for the massive wildebeest crossing of the Great Migration that travels across this part of Tanzania in a never-ending pursuit of food and water. Close by is the mid-range accommodation of Mara River Post, so you always have a front row seat, even from the privacy and comfort of your verandah.
Accommodation At Mara River PostChosen specifically for our guests who desire a balance of quality and quantity while in Africa, Mara River Post is a deluxe vacation tented lodge with only 20 rooms, aligned on the eastern and western side of the camp. Eight of the tents face west, and twelve face east. This design maximizes views of the Mara River or the vast plains, so be sure to request your preferred option for which views lie just outside your tent. Do you want to wake up to the sounds of animals stamping on the banks of the Mara River, nervously watching for hungry crocodiles, or would you like to start your day with the peaceful grazing of hooved creatures, oblivious to the lioness’s presence in the high grasses?
Each tent features dark wood plank floors accented by light wood elements, such as a writing desk with lamp, nightstands, luggage racks, textile rugs and a free-standing headboard to separate the sleeping area from the ensuite bathroom. There you find a small vanity, flush toilet, shower and dressing area. Outside is a shaded verandah with seating where you may sip coffee or tea at the beginning of each day. The experience is perfect for bush travelers who desire a cozy and serene escape from the thrill-a-minute action of an African safari.
Safari At Mara River PostExperience Serengeti activities from ground level and aloft. Morning and afternoon game drives keep you at the same level as the animals, so you feel the intensity that seems to unfold every moment, from lions taking down a powerful wildebeest to a baby elephant playfully chasing birds as they peck on the ground for insects. In the distance a dust cloud erupts on the horizon, signifying the arrival of over one million wildebeests and their zebra counterparts numbering in the hundreds of thousands. These animals are on a mission – to relocate to areas with the best grazing and water sources. You can see the desperation in their eyes as they stand along the banks of the Mara River, instinctively aware of the snapping jaws and deadly currents they must face.
After a day or two of terrestrial touring, take to the skies for an airborne adventure to see all that Serengeti offers. The day starts before dawn, when you are driven to the launch site, escorted into the basket of a hot air balloon, and gently lifted higher and higher. The balloon follows air currents, so you simply glide above the landscape. Upon landing, you are treated to a champagne breakfast. Such a unique and breathtaking experience, it will be a highlight of your AfricanMecca trip.
Dining At Mara River PostA massive floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace welcomes you to the intimate dining area that accommodates up to 20 guests, where the friendly staff serve delightful morsels created with fresh produce and meats sourced from local villages. Close by is a lounge area with bar where you can relax in upholstered chairs and sofas with a contemporary flair that brings the outdoors inside. The views of the plains are breathtaking, and you can commune with other guests during pre-dinner drinks and share stories of your high-adventure trip in Serengeti, building lifetime memories.

What We Like About Mara River Post
- Large tented chalet rooms with thatch roofs - ideal for guests who prefer a more secure lodging room e.g. families with young children. Not ideal for guests who prefer an authentic canvas bush camp.
- Mara River Post offers AfricanMecca guests an upper mid-range experience with an excellent location by the Mara River.
- The hilltop setting provides expansive views that are quite impressive.
- Elephants and other herbivores are frequent visitors around the camp property.
- With only 20 rooms, it is not a large lodge, and also ecological. Electricity is primarily sourced by solar energy. 80% of the water is sourced from the rains.
Things To Note When Staying At Mara River Post
- Expect a one-hour drive to the best vantage point for the Mara River crossing in the east near Kogatende. Mara River Post is approximately 20 km from Kogatende Airstrip, 12 km to Machochwe Gate and 35 km to Tabora B Gate.
- Dinner is served on separate tables to individual guests. The camp does not offer communal dinners with all other guests.
- The owners of the Mara River Post also have ties to the hunting industry in Tanzania.
- The best wildlife viewing from the camp is from the guest tents that face the river.
- Primary activities only are offered at this camp – there are no nature walks or village visits due to the western river location.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
