Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Endoro Lodge

Situated on the edge of the Northern Highland Forest Reserve in Tanzania, equidistant from the shallow, seasonal Lake Eyasi, the incomparably beautiful Lake Manyara, and the fabulous Ngorongoro Crater, favorite tour destination for visitors, Endoro Lodge provides basic comfort and convenience for cost-conscious guests on a safari holiday in Africa. It can be reached from Arusha through the villages in Karatu. Originally designed as a comfort accommodation, it retains the spacious rooms and serene atmosphere of earlier days and enjoys superb views over Ngorongoro Forest. It is a community-friendly lodge, fitting in with the declared ethos of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, which is to promote the involvement of local tribes’ people with wildlife conservation projects and revenue generated from safari holidays in Tanzania. It is only a short walk to the Endoro River Trail, which is well worth a visit in the wet season, with spectacular waterfalls, and elephant caves excavated by those gigantic pachyderms over hundreds of years in search of needed minerals in the soil. These caves vary in size, sometimes impressive, sometimes rained out and relatively small, but Maasai guides can tell you more about your viewing options and uphill climb to visit them. En-route, you may glimpse animals you won’t find on the crater floor, such as giraffes, on this part of your safari tour in Africa. You will certainly encounter troops of olive baboons and diverse species of birds, which could even include the elusive white-browed Robin Chat with its distinctive clattering call.

Accommodation At Endoro Lodge

18 private, detached, tin-roofed chalets nestle on two different levels among lush shrubs and banana plants along a steep hillside, linked by steep flights of steps and a meandering wild paved path to the main lodge buildings, reception, boutique, conference room and a separate large dining room adjoining a light and airy lounge bar where although there is no WiFi, a laptop is available for Internet connection. The accommodation is not suitable for less able visitors who intend to travel in Africa. Each surprisingly spacious chalet on one side of the property has an en-suite bathroom with double vanity unit, tub bath, and indoor/outdoor shower. Mosquito-netted beds assure peaceful nights whilst cozy arm chairs face large fireplaces which provide for comfortable warmth on chilly evenings. Hand-crafted furniture sits on polished hardwood floors with skin rugs and ethnic wall hangings. Every chalet has double French doors and a verandah commanding views of forested valley, highlands, and misty, distant crater sides. One family chalet has three bedrooms, a lounge, and two balconies. Housekeepers often provide arrangements of fresh flowers in fanciful welcoming patterns of flower buds and petals on baths, bathmats, and bedcovers, especially for birthdays and budget honeymooners on their African safari. There are smaller chalets on the opposite side of the gardens. No large mammals visit the lawns and gardens, but bush babies have been seen at night from bedroom windows. Available services include 24 hour hot water and laundry. A well-stocked curio shop displays local art and craft items, books and other souvenirs with lesser emulation of your tour in Tanzania.

Safari At Endoro Lodge

The most visited site (view map of Ngorongoro), and place with the largest concentration of wildlife in Africa is a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of a collapsed volcanic caldera ten miles wide enclosing grassy plains, forests, and swamps, with a central lake which provides year-round secure grazing for up to 30,000 mammals. This is the Ngorongoro Crater where you will also see one of the largest lion population, 6 prides of black-maned lions genetically different from any others in Tanzania because of their isolation on the crater floor. They prey on the tens of thousands of bearded wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles grazing the grassy plains. Scavengers such as jackals and spotted hyena also stalk the herds. On the fringes of the Lerai Forest, you will probably see black rhino, rarest of large African mammals which are very well protected in the Ngorongoro Crater. This is a wonderful conservation achievement as the female rhino only produce one youngster every 3 years on average. The rest of the Big Five, without which no African safari would be complete: king of the jungle – lion, the aggressive Cape buffalo, ponderous, wrinkled gray elephant tusker, and possibly even the reticent leopard can sometimes be seen on the same day for some lucky guests. The crater is also home to 500 species of birds, from the ecologically important vultures to galumphing ostriches and from stilt-legged flamingos to tiny jewel-like weavers and sun birds. Other favored activities outside the crater during your Tanzanian safari include biking, walking and making cultural visits to local villages and markets to appreciate the rich heritage of the African people, who, since upright man emerged from nearby Olduvai Gorge, have been living in harmony with their environment in what is still the nearest place to the original Garden of Eden (read more on surrounding attractions around Ngorongoro).

Dining At Endoro Lodge

Food at Endoro Lodge is locally produced, organic, freshly prepared and varied. A filling breakfast is available in the glass walled dining room, or a packed lunch can be taken for an early start on Endoro Lodge safaris to tourist lodestones such as Lakes Eyasi or Manyara, or most usually, a trip to Ngorongoro Crater floor. As you journey through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards the main crater gate, in a specially designed 4 x 4 people carrier with on board refreshments and pop-up game-spotting roof, your guide will also be in touch optionally with others by 2-way radio to share and track the present whereabouts of the Ngorongoro animals you most want to see. You will have lunch at a picnic site inside the crater to make the most of your visiting time which is restricted to six hours in any day to protect the fragile environment. Buffet lunch can also be taken in the lodge dining room. Sundowner drinks should be enjoyed on the patio outside the lounge bar as you watch shadows advance across the valley and stars emerge sparkling in the black velvet sky. Dinner is also served in the vaulted, roomy dining area. Four courses; usually a soup, salad, roast and dessert are accompanied by beers, wines, spirits and locally produced Tanzanian Arabica Coffee. Barbecues, bush breakfasts or dinners can also be pre-arranged.

When staying at Endoro Lodge near Ngorongoro Crater - Highlands (Karatu Farmlands), we recommend combining it with your Northern Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Serengeti (wildebeest migration). End your trip with a Swahili cultural tour and beach holiday in Zanzibar.

You may optionally extend out to offbeat parks in Southern and Western Tanzania such as Selous, Ruaha or Katavi ending with a chimpanzee trekking safari at Gombe or Mahale by the relaxing Lake Tanganyika.
