KIUNGA MARINE RESERVE EXPERIENCE IN LAMU WITH AFRICANMECCA

Just off the northern coast of Kenya is Kiunga Marine National Reserve, a collection of approximately fifty calcareous isles and coral reefs. The reserve extends more than 37 miles parallel to the shoreline and shares boundaries with two other terrestrial reserves, namely Dodori and Boni. The islands of the reserve range in size and lie on the inland side of the fringing reef approximately 1.25 miles from the beaches of Lamu Island.

As you approach the islets on your snorkeling trip, the sheer cliff walls command attention, and the only breaks in the vertical masses are areas on the inland side that have been eroded by the saltwater. The protected status of the reserve ensures the conservation of many critical ecosystems, both on land and in the water.

AfricanMecca recommends that you spend some time in Kiunga Marine National Reserve to see the migratory birds that nest on the islands, as well as one of the world's greatest coral reefs that is teeming with fish, sea turtle, sea star, sea urchin and many other marine species.

  • I had just the BEST time in Lamu - quite probably the holiday of my life - and am determined to go back in November. I have to say, the holiday was made by Altaf's dedication to what I needed - he worked very hard to ensure I got the full ten night stay at Kipungani, and I was impressed to say the least. Many thanks - I'll be back.
Jeremy King, Senior Producer GMTV - London, United Kingdom
