AFRICAN HERITAGE HOUSE IN NAIROBI
Designed by Alan Donovan, the American co-founder of the African Heritage Pan African Galleries, African Heritage House celebrates the art, cultures and architectural design of Africa, and staying on the property is an intriguing part of your artistic vacation to Kenya. Built using a unique blend of traditional African mud construction techniques, the 6 room house immerses you in the rich history and traditions of Africa, all with Nairobi National Park just outside your window. You needn’t feel overwhelmed by the surroundings, as the custodian gives you a personal 90-minute tour of the house and grounds when you arrive, and the staff is attentive and friendly. As soon as you enter the house, you will truly understand why it has been lauded by the media to become the most photographed house on the continent. The décor takes you on a private cultural holiday in Africa with an eclectic collection of original sculptures, tribal costumes, native arts and crafts, jewelry, musical instruments and hand-crafted furniture. Each room is individually appointed with comfortable beds adorned with ornate canopies, Lamu-style ceiling, Mombasa Swahili bed, Bakuba women cloth tapestries from Congo, clanship rugs, and much more. Request a room on the second floor and you may be treated to the sounds of wildlife at night, and rooms on the top floor have wonderful viewing decks. For additional comfort during your overnight trip to Nairobi with AfricanMecca, you may consider requesting a queen or king-size bed, as some guests may not be comfortable in the double beds offered in some rooms.
For your meals, local cuisine is freshly prepared and served poolside or in the rooftop dining area, a location that is transformed into a gathering place for sunset cocktails. Should you desire a cocktail or warm beverage later in the evening, though, you should request these in advance as the house staff retires early in the evening. The house features a swimming pool for your use and you may even purchase authentic African artifacts during your stay. As you gaze across the plains on a very clear day, you may catch sight of two iconic landmarks that are sure to be an integral part of your remote safari expeditions in East Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro and the Ngong Hills. With the national park just outside your door, you can begin your safari adventures in East Africa before you even reach the remote wilderness! The park is home to many of the plains animals, such as giraffe, buffalo, rhino, impala and even a few carnivores (read more on when is the best time to travel to Nairobi for a Kenyan safari). Should you prefer cultural and historical experiences, Nairobi is an interesting urban destination for guided city tours with AfricanMecca, shopping, dining and much more. Local attractions accessible from the African Heritage House include David and Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen Museum, Kazuri Beads, Giraffe Centre, to name a few of the most popular tour spots.
