GUIDE ON SENTINEL MARA CAMP IN KENYA
Sentinel Mara Camp is a small, eco-friendly accommodation located in a secluded corner beside the Mara River close to the Musiara Marsh sector. The owners Peter and Wendy Twycross set up this bush camp to welcome discerning travelers to this spectacular expanse in south-western Kenya. The camp is seasonally operated and closes during the long rains to ensure that they leave a minimum impact on the fragile ecosystem and the land they occupy has time to regenerate. From your perch on the raised bank of the river, you can watch crocodiles napping on the sandbanks, hippos wallowing in its waters and elephant herds bathing and drinking from it. This deluxe camp is completely made up of canvas tents with the lounge and dining area furnished with minimalistic comfortable sofas, chairs and decor. A hint of old world charm adds to their appeal with the dresser on one side of the lounge, a vintage chess set and lanterns, yesteryear phonograph and subtle artefacts like the copper elephant. Spend time outdoors in a seating arrangement sheltered under layered parasols or enjoy a relaxing nap on your laid-back bush vacation in East Africa in a hammock stretched between two trees. AfricanMecca lodgers touring the Masai Mara National Reserve (view map) are invited to stay in their 7 spacious, deluxe tents lighted by solar panel-generated electricity. Wrought iron bedsteads with four posters have mosquito nets spread over them that lend a dreamlike quality to the tent. Tarp covers the evened out floors with woven throw rugs for added comfort while mesh windows allow in the scents and sights of the wilderness with soft breezes floating up from the river. A canvas closet, safety chest and a dresser sit at the back, and safari chairs are placed on the patio outside so you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the river and perhaps warthogs, giraffes and many more animals. The bathroom has a yesteryear table-top wash basin and shower area with an enclosed toilet zone. Dine as you please in the camp's dining tent or in the open beside the river. The camp offers wholesome five-course meals with careful attention to presentation. Every evening, a campfire is lit, and you can sip sundowner drinks as you watch the sunsets over the magnificent Masai Mara. Recount your experiences of the day and make friends with other guests holidaying in Masai Mara Reserve, and later savor dinner under the velvet African skies with lanterns all around adding a Swahili Nights appeal to your meal. The Masai Mara Game Reserve is privileged to host one of the most phenomenal of nature’s displays, the Great Migration of the wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and elands as they travel looking for fresh grass and water. While you could chance to watch them cross the Mara River from the camp, you could also go on game drives to view them more closely. Armed with cameras and binoculars, you could sit in custom-fitted safari vehicles and watch them struggle to escape predatory crocodiles in the river and others carnivores like lions, leopards, hyenas and many more on the plains. Listen in awe as your experienced guide lends you more in-depth information about all the wildlife you see. Wander on foot in the dense bushland under the direction of an accomplished Sentinel Mara naturalist and view the wondrous flora, insects, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals of Masai Mara. Also, take a cultural expedition to a nearby Maasai village and understand their way of life, the concluding enlightenment experience to your wondrous trip in Africa. You can also opt to include a balloon flight over the Masai Mara on your handcrafted AfricanMecca itinerary.
