GADGETS & DESCENT PROTOCOLS - KILI SAFETY GUIDE

Do Your Need High Tech Safety Equipment On Kilimanjaro? Scroll Down

CALMING YOUR FEAR FACTOR FOR HIGH TECH MOUNTAIN GADGETS & KILIMANJARO SAFETY DESCENT PROTOCOLS

There are several pieces of technical apparatus touted by some tour operators as safety requisites for a climb on Kilimanjaro. Many of them sound more useful than they are, and in terms of cost-effectiveness can be worse than useless. Uhuru Trails by AfricanMecca do not routinely carry Gamow portable hyperbaric chamber bags except when sleeping overnight in the crater. Defibrillators are heavy and cumbersome, often unreliable and unnecessary on Kilimanjaro due its altitude in comparison to Everest where it is needed. But if you are seriously concerned, prepared to pay the extra premium for porterage and hire costs. Our skilled guides do carry emergency oxygen and are trained to administer it. But it is reserved for emergency use and not to assist people to summit. The best way to do that is to optimize your own personal fitness and avoid unnecessary physical or mental stress. Better still, invest the time and money to spend ample time in a preliminary acclimatization excursion of Mount Meru. Rather than relying on hyperbaric oxygen to combat altitude sickness, you should pace yourself carefully, make sure you are well acclimatized, sleep well, eat well and drink plenty of fluids. Trust your guide with your safety. Hide nothing from him and rest easy. He carries a comprehensive First Aid kit and pulse oximeter and is trained to use them when required.

Uhuru Trails do not use fear as an excuse to charge for flashy technological fixes on Kilimanjaro mountain trips. It makes more sense to ensure that you sleep safely in warm, comfortable 4 season Hilleberg tents, sturdy enough to withstand gale force winds on high ridges and to bear heavy snowfalls without collapsing. Restless, uncomfortable nights in cramped quarters will adversely affect your mood and your joints, making your trek more of an ordeal than it needs to be. Your tent is your haven where you will spend a lot of your night time. You need sound, restful sleep assured by the best portable accommodation available. One climber in 1,000 (0.1%) will die on Kilimanjaro, but half of these deaths are not preventable and the rest are as likely to be from existing conditions or accident as from severe altitude sickness, which only builds up to life-threatening levels if you do not report your symptoms in a mistaken effort to tough it out. Better give up your summit attempt than your life. Hanging about at altitude, even with the most modern equipment, will not help. You need to get down as fast as you can. Wheeled stretchers are carried where accessible for those who cannot walk. Rescue vehicles and even helicopters are available in extreme cases. Any standard costs incurred in getting off the mountain on foot or vehicle are included in your tariff, but outside medical treatment and air evacuation is not. Be sure you are covered by a reputable travel insurance that includes mountain air evacuation and also unrestricted medical services so that the local hospital can deal with them directly if necessary. By choosing to climb with Uhuru Trails by AfricanMecca, heeding their pre and on-site advice and communicating freely with your guide, you have already maximized your summit chances so that you can relax and enjoy your Kilimanjaro trekking safari to the roof of Africa.
