KERVAN SARAY BEACH LODGE IN PEMBA
The focus of your stay at the Kervan Saray Beach Lodge is the diving and snorkeling exploration of the magnificent aquatic treasures of Pemba Island, a gorgeous green jewel in the Indian Ocean, north of Zanzibar in southern Tanzania. Alight from the boat and you will be mesmerized by the incredible beauty of the silken soft sands, lush tropical greenery and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean sparkling in the sunshine. The hotel offers a no-frills holiday stayover in this part of remote Eastern Africa with a simple, rustic charm. Crafted out of naturally occurring materials in keeping with eco-friendly principles, it has an agreeable lounge and bar topped with a thatched roof and cooled by the gentle ocean breezes. Sandy pathways take you to 11 rooms located in individual villas with each having a garden around it. Deluxe Rooms 1 to 7 have a large double bed and an additional third bed covered with mosquito nets. These rooms can comfortably sleep three AfricanMecca guests. The other two rooms (Room 8 & 9) are categorized as “dormitories” and can comfortably accommodate up to backpacker groups of 4 vacationing guests each. Kervan Saray also offers 2 bunk rooms that are well suited for budget traveling families and can sleep up to 6 guests at a time. Ensuite bathrooms have water for showers warmed naturally by the sun, and you can charge your electronics in the accommodation office. Generators provide the electricity for the ceiling fans in the evenings.Have appetizing, home-cooked wholesome meal in their open-air restaurant and later in the evenings, a bonfire is lit to add a cozy feel to your dinner. During the day, you can explore the island’s varied landscape of deep valleys and steep hillsides. Pemba Island is home to a unique species of birds, the Flying Fox Bats that have faces resembling a fox and wingspans of 1.60 meters, subsisting on a primarily fruit diet. You will also see other creatures such as vervet and red colobus monkeys and many other bird species such as Pemba white-eye, scops owl, African goshawk and malachite vultures, to name a scarce few. Visit the fortress of Mkama Ndume where your AfricanMecca assigned guide will show around the many cultural and historical relics that reveal the traces of Swahili, Arab and Portuguese influences in the island's history. Chwaka used to be the island's capital at one time, and here you can also view tombs of the 18th-century Mazrui rulers. The present day capital is Chake Chake, and here, you can go shopping for handcrafted mementos of your Swahili coast tour. In the waters off the shoreline, there are distinct marine coral reserves where seemingly endless rows of reefs of varying depths host a rich diversity of aquatic creatures that will delight you with their various colors and shapes. You could also go on a thrilling fishing trip to the deep-water sites and channels around Mafia Island where you might encounter game fish like wahoo, marlin, barracuda, trevally, sailfish, swordfish and many more. Visit the spice farms on the island, and learn about their many uses aside from flavoring food, and later ending with an invigorating stroll around the lighthouse or excursing out to Ngezi Forest. Back at Kervan Saray Beach Lodge, revel in the glorious sunset while seated on the beachfront and touched by the ebbing tide.
