GUIDE ON NGULIA SAFARI LODGE IN KENYA
A backdrop of the towering Ngulia Hills with the fence-protected Rhino Sanctuary spread before you; this is the location of the economy Ngulia Safari Lodge. Natural watering holes in the plain below you attract many animals coming to drink and your wildlife engrossed trip to East Africa will be filled with exhilarating moments as you watch herds of elephants hose up the water with their trunks while leopards prowl in the night looking for an easy baited meal. Sited on the Ndawe Escarpment in Tsavo West National Park, the lodge has a borehole which is used to ensure that the artificial watering hole on the lodge ground is filled so animals that converge to drink from it. AfricanMecca does not recommend its travelers to stay at Ngulia Lodge on the basis that it baits a resident leopard each night. This kind of non-natural means of feeding wild cats is not progressive to conservation and self-preservation of the African wildlife. It is unclear why Kenya Wildlife Service does not ban such practices in a government managed park. You can choose from one of the 52 rooms the lodge offers. Each room offers you sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and comes with either a double bed or twin beds. Mosquito nets suspended from the ceiling offer protection against insects, and while the rooms on the upper floors have a balcony each, those on the ground level have a patio. Since the lodge is a budget elderly establishment, you should expect basic rooms, some that lack maintenance and seem jaded in places. Ngulia has two restaurants where they serve passable meals, buffet style. The main restaurant overlooks the watering hole and the expanse of Tsavo West. At dinner time, the area is lit with floodlights so you can watch nocturnal animals visiting the hole. They have a second dining area called the Leopard Dining Tree and two bars, one of which is the Leopard View Bar. The lodge also has a swimming pool around which you can spend time relaxing on your vacation in the serene ambience of Tsavo West National Park. Your days at the Ngulia Lodge begin in the early morning with a game drive tour. You will have a custom-built safari vehicle and an informed, experienced guide to accompany you. As you leave from the lodge, you might spot a rhino since few have been released in the lodge's vicinity. You might also see the kings of the park, the lions that have evolved with very short manes to also mane-less in adaptation to the heat of Tsavo and others that are the historical man-eaters of Tsavo as depicted in the movie “The Ghost and the Darkness”. The savannah grasslands support many hoofed creatures like giraffes, zebras, oryx, wildebeest, gerenuks, buffalos and many more roaming in a breathtaking landscape with its solidified lava flows, lone-standing hills and riverside vegetation that present many opportunities for taking memorable photographs. After lunch at the lodge, you can go for nature walks under the supervision of a trained naturalist or visit a Maasai village to learn about their rites and customs, and maybe pick up a delicate, handcrafted artifact or curio in support of the local artisans. Also, spend your Kenyan wildlife holiday with AfricanMecca exploring the many attractions of Tsavo like Mzima Springs with its fishes, crocodiles and hippos, Shetani Lava Flows, Kichwa Tembo cliffs and Roaring Rocks. Spend your dream safari in Africa for a time filled with wonder and awe.
