GUIDE ON FINCH HATTONS CAMP IN KENYA
Inspired by Denys Finch Hatton luxurious safari hosting expeditions, Finch Hattons Camp is an upmarket accommodation located in Tsavo West National Park. This boutique camp combines all the elements of luxury colonial living combined with contemporary camping that includes canvas tents on raised wooden platforms with frill facilities. Added to that is the subtle essence of Out Of Africa in the form of tree trunk pillars, thatched roofs and yesteryear pictures on the walls depicting scenes from Denys Hatton’s time. AfricanMecca guests traveling in magical Kenya will be welcomed in the main house of the camp, resplendent with its colonial furniture, stone fireplaces, hardwood floors and a decor that sends you back to the times of earlier explorers in Africa. The camp is housed on a 31-acre property and has 17 tented rooms in a setting of lush greenery with yellow acacia trees, overlooking watering holes that are served by pure, natural run-offs from Mount Kilimanjaro. A resident pod of hippos, fresh water turtles and crocodiles cohabit here, and you might see a pair of eyes and snout watching you from a distance while stationary monitor lizards bask on the rocks closer to shore. Of the 17 rooms, 14 are Luxury Tented Suites and 2 are Luxury Tented Family Suites that feature two bedrooms, each with an attached bathroom and exclusive living area (read more on where else to stay in Tsavo West on your Kenyan safari). The camp also offers a Presidential Tented Suite for the discerning traveler touring Tsavo West National Park that includes a heated plunge pool, kitchenette and quarters for the butler. You can also request for a personal chef. The tents are nestled under thatched roofs and have netted windows that let in the ambience of the wilderness. They are furnished with twin beds or double beds with antique lamps, elegant, floor rugs, writing desk and plush seating arrangements. The en-suite bathrooms are permanent structures with a washbasin, hot water for your showers, shaver outlets and hair dryers. Spend time on the spacious deck outside with cool drinks from your mini-bar as you revel in the natural splendor of Tsavo on your dream East African holiday. Meals at Finch Hattons are elaborate affairs with distinctive gourmet dishes cooked to cater to every taste and preference. Have breakfast and lunch on the open terrace while dinners are lavish meals complimented by a collection of wines and spirits from the camp's own wine cellar. They also have two bars where you can order drinks, a library and various other entertainment and wellness avenues. While part of your glamorous vacation in Kenya is complete by just staying at the camp watching traversing wildlife going on with their daily living, do go for game drives to explore the wonderland that is Tsavo West. The park is a proud host to the Big Five of Africa, the elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino and lion with its unusually short manes. The elephants of Tsavo seem red owing to the ochre-colored mud they spray on their skins to protect it from parasites. A custom-built safari vehicle will be provided for your use with an experienced, well-informed AfricanMecca guide on board (read more on when is the best time to visit Tsavo West). He will provide you with in-depth knowledge of the wildlife you see and their behaviors. Go on walks in the bush and night drives, and on these excursions you will be able to spot some of the 600 birds that reside in Tsavo West National Park. Another highlight of your cultural trip to Africa that will leave you with many fond memories is your visit to a Maasai village on the way to Tsavo from Amboseli. They will gladly share with you their culture and ancient lore, and you will be delighted to see their distinct handicrafts, weapons and lifestyles.
