GUIDE ON SAMBURU SOPA LODGE IN KENYA
As you drive into Samburu Sopa Lodge on your wilderness holiday in northern Kenya with AfricanMecca, it will seem to you like Samburu village houses have been replicated in its architectural designs. The warm color scheme of the golden earth and the yellows and browns of the arid landscape along with the ochre of the stone tiles on the floor are stunningly handsome. Traditional Samburu art adorns the walls and the lodge’s remarkably shaped buildings with their open, curved entrances make you beam at their ingenuity. High thatched ceilings cool the breeze as it circulates freely through the lodge. The main house of this economical lodge includes a spacious lounge and bar where Wi-Fi services are available to connected guests traveling in Samburu (view wilderness map). A dining area is part of the main house, but there is also a covered terrace where you can have al fresco, buffet meals as you gaze over the wild countryside at animals wandering amidst the shrub. If you have any distinct dietary requests or require specific meals for kids, do let us at the time of planning your trip. Food standards are just adequate. The mosaic-lined pool is a part of this complex and you can order drinks as you swim, at the bar beside it. You could also relax in a lounge chair or sunbed on the stone deck around the main pool and also watch as your toddlers’ splash in the special kiddie pool. The lodge has thirty individual guest cottages each comprising of two rooms totaling to 60 rooms. These cottages are arranged in a rough semicircle around a central semi-arid watering hole where animals come to drink during the day and night. The cottages have a unique curved shape and their rounded roofs are thatched with grass. Walkways with stone floors lead from the main complex to the cottages and you will be assigned a guard to escort you to the room since the lodge is unfenced. The rooms of the lodge do not have fan; though, it is built to allow incoming air to cool the rooms but it still does get hot on some days. Electricity is regulated by the management and turned on only for a few hours in the morning, midday and evening. Each of the rooms has two queen-size beds to accommodation up to four guests. A small stone wardrobe where you can unpack your things and dresser are placed in your room. The en-suite bathroom comes with a shower stall and a hairdryer is available for your use. Outside your room is a small, shaded verandah bordered by a low stone wall facing the wilderness of Samburu. Spend time on your serene vacation in East Africa reveling in the tranquility broken only by the calls of more than 450 species of birds and a number of mammals. AfricanMecca Safaris arranges for game drives in custom-equipped safari vehicles so you can explore Samburu on your tour of magical Kenya. Your skilled and knowledgeable guide will track and point out to you the special five of Samburu, the Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and gerenuks. These beautiful and rare species are endemic only to northern Kenya. Go for nature walks around the lodge ground where an accompanying naturalist will show you how to identify footprints, trails, droppings and also spot creatures like the leopard tortoise, dung beetles, varied insects, plants and more. Samburu is also home to predators like cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs and lions, and when you visit the Ewaso Nyiro River, you are likely to see crocodiles sunning themselves on its banks. You also have buffaloes, elephants, hippos, impalas, waterbucks, dik diks, warthogs, baboon and more. Sign off your adventurous trip in Samburu with a cultural visit to the local village and a souvenir foray at the lodge’s boutique in support of traditional artists.
