GUIDE ON ELEPHANT BEDROOM CAMP IN KENYA
You stir in the early hours of the morning to chirping of birds in the trees and the murmur of the river flowing close by. From the mesh windows on the sides of your tent, you are thrilled to see an elephant making its way to the river. As you fully awaken, you remember you are on wilderness vacation in northern Kenya at the Elephant Bedroom Camp and that passerby probably was one of the resident elephants who normally hang around the campgrounds for access to their morning drink. Located in Samburu National Reserve, this upmarket, premier camp is a delightful combination of serenity with wildlife sounds and sights. They have a main reception tent that also houses a comfortable seating area adjoining the bar and dining room, and is made of canvas walls with net windows and open fronts that let in the soft river breeze. The entire structure is sited on a raised wooden deck with a few steps from the ground level. The spacious deck serves as a viewing post with picturesque scenes of the river and you could also have your meals served on it. 12 spacious tented rooms at Elephant Bedroom Camp are spread on the banks of the river in lush woodland of acacia and doum palms (read more on where else to stay in Samburu). AfricanMecca guests traveling in wondrous Samburu can choose from tents that are erected at ground level or on a platform raised on poles. Eight of the tents have queen-size twin beds while the other four have king-size double beds. The tents have an outdoor plunge pool to absorb the ecology of Samburu all around you with a small seating arrangement where you can perhaps enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Small painting frames light up the walls and colorful rugs with African motifs enliven the floors. The bathroom is at back and includes a double basin, shower and customized, quality toiletries. There are also bathrobes and slippers placed in the tent for your use and you will adore their ethnic shell embellishments on the robes.
The camp serves you delicious meals in the dining room or in the open on the deck outside or by the river. A fire lit in the evenings adds to the cozy ambience of twilight on your authentic trip in East Africa. Have a lovely candle-lit dinner under a canopy of African stars. Or you could also have breakfast or lunch beside the river and later relax in a strung hammock set out for you. Of course, there is always a coincidental elephant, impala or baboon stopping by to find their own meals. To see more fauna, you will go on daylong game drives stopping for breakfast and lunch in the bush. AfricanMecca Safaris arranges for custom-built safari vehicles for you and a proficient, experienced guide on board will introduce you to the Big Special Five of Samburu, the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somalia ostrich and gerenuk, an unusual long necked antelope. While predator touring Samburu, look out for leopards, lions, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs, and on the riverbanks, basking Nile crocodiles (read more on when is the best time to visit Samburu). On bush walks, your naturalist guide will show you how to study animal tracks and droppings, insects, varied birdlife and reptiles like the leopard tortoises. He will also reveal to you the traditional medicines the Samburu people make from the plants and trees you see. Back at the camp, visit the safari spa for a relaxing massage. Spend your dream holiday in this backwoods of Africa at the Elephant Bedroom Camp and take home many memories of a relaxed, magnificent time.
