AUTHENTIC SAFARIS & PERSONALIZED TOURS IN SAMBURU WITH AFRICANMECCA
Exclusive game viewing activities can be arranged in both Samburu National Reserve and the nearby Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Drives are scheduled each day in the morning and afternoon, and AfricanMecca Safaris can also make special arrangements for half-day game drives that include a bush breakfast before returning to camp to escape the mid-day heat.
The surreal geologic features and the exquisite wildlife presence make Samburu an absolute paradise for photographers, amateurs and professionals alike. The presence of reticulated giraffes, elephants, gerenuks, buffalos, hippos, oryx, ostriches and many other herbivores, as well as stealthy leopards, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles and other hunters means that every nature and wildlife lover will have an absolutely thrilling holiday in Samburu Reserve.
For those times when you prefer a much more leisurely pace, such as after breakfast or lunch, we recommend birdwatching and nature walks. With more than 450 species of avi-fauna in the reserve, you are sure to see feathered residents along the Ewaso Nyiro River, soaring high overhead, in the trees and anywhere else you may look.
Some of the birds include vulturine guineafowl, red-and-yellow barbet, eastern yellow-billed hornbill, banded warbler, fire-fronted bishop to name a few. Two-thirds of ninety species from neighboring countries have also been recorded in the reserve, as well as two globally threatened species – lesser kestrels and lesser falcons.
AfricanMecca highly recommends a guided nature walk, as these activities give you an in-depth and intimate perspective of the Samburu ecology with a sense of touch, smell, sound and sight. A naturalist explains the flora and fauna, as well as the geologic and human history of the reserve. A hearty picnic lunch in the bush can be arranged as part of your birding and nature walks.
Your guides are members of the Samburu tribes, and you delve further into the traditions and daily lives of these people with an ethnic tour of one of East Africa’s most authentic native community (read more on the cultural safari experiences in the wilds of Kenya). Visit local villages to see firsthand how these indigenous people successfully protect their ancient practices while balancing the demands of modern life. You may have a chance to see traditional dances, artisanship, schooling, family roles, cattle herding and much more!

BEST TIME TO VISIT SAMBURU
The long dry season from July to October is the best time to visit Samburu. You enjoy sunny, blue skies with almost no rain. Water sources are limited so the animals congregate along the Ewaso River.
