SUBIRA HOUSE IN LAMU
Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Subira House
The Swedish owners of Subira House have lovingly restored a historic Swahili mansion to provide you with an authentic coastal holiday on Lamu Island. Conveniently located near the old Fort, oceanfront and town center, the 7 room hotel is an affordable option for AfricanMecca travelers who want the benefits of being on Lamu Island without overextending their budgets. Your guest room is solely designed to immerse you in the coastal lifestyle and cultural influences of the island with a decor that includes locally hand-crafted furniture, comfortable bed, electric fan and views of the market or gardens. On the ground floor is an apartment that opens to the courtyard and has a kitchen should you prefer to prepare your own delectable meals, making it an excellent choice should you have an extended cultural and seaside vacation in Kenya. Subira pays special attention to protecting the precious environment of the island, including waterless eco-toilets, complimentary shopping basket and extra absorbent towels. All of the rooms have delightful views and some with ocean waft, but the "top-top" rooms enjoy the best breezes and views, and you also have the benefit of extra space in the form a terrace. The electricity at the house is powered by a generator and quite efficient, and you should carry a torch for those nights when you walk through the narrow passages for dinner and other outings. The owners of Subira House take great pride in offering guests fresh, organic dishes that have become known as "slow food," a phrase that not only reflects the relaxed character of the town, but also the time that is taken to carefully prepare your meals. An adequate breakfast is served each day and includes farm-fresh eggs, local honey, homemade yogurt, freshly baked bread, mango jam and fresh fruit. For an additional supplement, the kitchen can also prepare your dinner, but this needs to be requested in the morning. Sampling local cuisine is an interesting part of your AfricanMecca cultural trip on Lamu Island, and a unique ingredient that is used at Subira House is the hibiscus flower. This botanical treasure is not only beautiful, but it has also been shown to have some health benefits, so we recommend that you try freshly prepared hibiscus tea or juice during your coastal travel on the Indian Ocean. After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the town of Lamu to discover the quaint, well-preserved coral stone houses, historic landmarks and markets that contributed to Lamu being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular interest are the Lamu Museum and neighboring Lamu Fort. With the beautiful Indian Ocean a short walk away, water sports are sure to be an integral part of your memorable beach tour in East Africa. Some of the most popular aquatic activities are snorkeling around the coral reefs, sailing, wind surfing, deep sea fishing and kite surfing.

AfricanMecca Safari could not have been more helpful through the entire process of planning our trip to Kenya. Our trip to Lamu (a suggestion by Raza) was incredible, and Kizingo is a perfect place to stay there. All in all, we had an amazing time in Kenya.

Lamu was fabulous. hot and sunny and we again were delighted with our accommodation. Everything was run smoothly and without any hitches and we are most grateful for a truly memorable holiday of a life time. You organised everything efficiently which made life so easy for us.
Angela Cook - London, United Kingdom
I had just the BEST time in Lamu - quite probably the holiday of my life - and am determined to go back in November. I have to say, the holiday was made by Altaf's dedication to what I needed - he worked very hard to ensure I got the full ten night stay at Kipungani, and I was impressed to say the least. Many thanks - I'll be back.

Raza, I have returned from the trip to Kenya you arranged. It went quite well and all of your advice about hotels etc was correct and prevented me from doing things less than optimal. I really enjoyed Lamu; it is one of the best beaches I have seen.

Raza, I want to tell you that all aspects of our travel arrangements with you ran smoothly. Our visit to Lamu was most enjoyable and a pleasant contrast to the highlands. I will unreservedly recommend AfricanMecca to others.
