BAYTIL AJAIB IN LAMU

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Baytil Ajaib

Baytil Ajaib or House of Wonder is a world heritage building (over 250 years old) that has been restored into a house-hotel to offer guests the unique experience of living in an authentic Swahili mansion on their coastal vacation in Kenya. The original artwork and architecture, using natural locally found materials, has been carefully maintained. Restoration efforts that went into its preservation were undertaken with care to project its 25 decades history. Today, the Baytil Ajaib is a wondrous, affordable accommodation located on an elevation point in the Mkomani area of Lamu Island on the south-eastern coast of Kenya. This elevation allows you a bird's eye view of the town of Lamu, the islands close by and the channel with yesteryear dhows, from the top of the hotel. AfricanMecca guests staying over at the Baytil Ajaib are offered 4 rooms in the family residential wing of the house. If you are a lone AfricanMecca guest travelling in coastal Kenya for trade or holiday, you will find the Tamu Room very comfortable. The room is done up in colors of aubergine, blue and white lime plaster, and has some pieces of furniture brought in from the east. The ambience of the room weaves an atmosphere of tranquility around you. Couples combining their honeymoon with a tour in Lamu will absolutely love the romantic feel of Baytil Ajaib's Bridal Room. It includes a Swahili-style bed, writing desk, and lounge, and beautiful antiques scattered around that add to its artistic appeal. The en-suite bathroom includes a shower with hot and cold water.

The Garden Suite is located on the rooftop of the Baytil Ajaib and is adorned with fragrant, many colored flowers and has an exclusive courtyard. Spacious and decorated with wall murals, the bedroom has a bed that is built similar to that of the King of Kilwa. The lounge includes armchairs, divans and daybeds and has many antiques arranged for that age-old Swahili feel. This suite is comfortable for a group of three people. The Hareem is the largest suite in the Baytil Ajaib and a group of four people can be accommodated here. It occupies an entire floor in the hotel and has verandas around a central courtyard, typical of old Swahili mansions. The Hareem houses the Sultan's bedroom that has an anteroom, en-suite bathroom and lounge of its own. Persian carpets, wall murals, splendid archways with bedazzled storage chests, daybeds, loungers and divans add to the comfort of the Hareem. You can order meals to your specification and chefs at the Baytil Ajaib will prepare them for you. While you can have lunch and dinner in the hotel’s dining area located on the ground floor, if you choose to, you can have breakfast served in your room. Lamu with its serene African atmosphere, pristine beaches and solitude is ideal for a relaxing holiday trip in East Africa. You can fish, snorkel and dive or just sunbathe (read more on when is the best time to travel to Lamu). With the aide of your local expert AfricanMecca guide, visit the Lamu Museum located in the fort or visit the old bazaar to buy some Swahili gifts to take back home. Also, try freshly caught seafood cooked to perfection in coconut oil or coconut milk that lends a unique flavor to it.

  • AfricanMecca Safari could not have been more helpful through the entire process of planning our trip to Kenya. Our trip to Lamu (a suggestion by Raza) was incredible, and Kizingo is a perfect place to stay there. All in all, we had an amazing time in Kenya.

  • Lamu was fabulous. hot and sunny and we again were delighted with our accommodation. Everything was run smoothly and without any hitches and we are most grateful for a truly memorable holiday of a life time. You organised everything efficiently which made life so easy for us.

  • I had just the BEST time in Lamu - quite probably the holiday of my life - and am determined to go back in November. I have to say, the holiday was made by Altaf's dedication to what I needed - he worked very hard to ensure I got the full ten night stay at Kipungani, and I was impressed to say the least. Many thanks - I'll be back.
Jeremy King, Senior Producer GMTV - London, United Kingdom
  • Raza, I have returned from the trip to Kenya you arranged. It went quite well and all of your advice about hotels etc was correct and prevented me from doing things less than optimal. I really enjoyed Lamu; it is one of the best beaches I have seen.
