OL CHORO OIROUA CONSERVANCY

OL CHORO OIROUA IN NORTHERN MASAI MARA

Ol Choro Oiroua Conservancy covers 17,000 acres of a group ranch in the northest section of Masai Mara wilderness. The conservancy logistics and land are managed by Seiya Limited under the guardianship of Fairmont Kenya. The guest accommodations in the conservancy generate the revenue that is needed for wildlife protection, security efforts, maintaining the roads and other necessary operational aspects. Additionally, the revenue enhances the lives of the indigenous Maasai tribe through community projects, both in the urban and rural areas. Even the youngest members of the tribe benefit from the efforts of the conservancy. Enkerende School was established using funding from the conservancy to fill the gap in education by establishing a local primary school in a church setting. Ol Choro Oiroua also advances the economic status by supporting several projects that empower those who would otherwise live in insufficiency. The conservancy takes a unique approach to improving the quality of life. By recognizing the impact of improper waste management in the area, the conservancy saw an opportunity to decrease the burden on the natural environment while providing opportunities for income, cultural preservation and self-sufficiency. By transforming recyclable waste products into arts and crafts, the community projects of the conservancy effectively addresses two often-overlooked problems – income generation and environmental pollutants in land-based and aquatic ecosystems. The conservancy supports two projects – one for women and one for those living in the impoverished sections of Nairobi. AfricanMecca visitants who stay at the conservancy have a chance to see the jewelry, sculptures, handbags and other products that are created from recyclable materials. In following best practices of low density experiences at Ol Choro Oiroua, the conservancy has 65 rooms (1 room per over 250 acres) in between three-member accommodations, the largest being Fairmont with 50 rooms while the remaining 2 camps have 15 rooms in total. The accommodations that are part of Ol Choro are Fairmont Mara Safari Club, Richard's Forest Camp and Ngerende Island Lodge.
