RAS MBISI LODGE IN MAFIA
Nestled within a palm grove of lush landscaped tropical gardens on a tranquil seaside on Mafia Island is the Ras Mbisi Lodge. Crafted lovingly out of locally available coconut wood by the skilled fingers of the local Tanzanian artisans, this mid-range vacationing accommodation has a pleasant, welcoming feel to it. The lounge, bar and restaurant are all located in a single two-story structure that has a quaint charm about it with its thatched roof on a frame of wooden poles, handmade wooden furniture, including a dhow that adds a castaway island look to its ambience. Play a game of pool in the lounge or relax beside the swimming pool. You could go on long walks on the beachfront or for an invigorating swim in the tepid waters of the ocean. The Ras Mbisi has a collection of 9 bandas constructed on raised platforms just a short distance from the beach – perfect for like-minded and discerning AfricanMecca guests. Their sloping thatched roofs are perfect for catching the ocean breezes and keeping the interiors cool. In the front, is a veranda with relaxing chairs for reveling in the stunning beauty of the azure Indian Ocean while the sleeping area is adjacent to it. A sitting arrangement along with a mosquito netting covered bed grace this area. The ensuite bathroom at the back includes twin vanities, a wooden shower enclosure and deluxe toiletries along with warm water for your showers. Dine on delicious multi-cuisine meals, served buffet-style, accompanied by fine wines. The fare includes fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood sourced from on and around the island.Spend your days watching herons fish in the waters from the comfort of your lounger, and should you tour the island during migrating season, you might just be able to spot whale sharks and humpback whales making their way south. You could also swim with them under the supervision of an expert marine guide. In the southeastern section of Mafia Island is Chole Bay, an ethereal underwater world that you can explore with scuba diving and snorkeling expeditions organized by AfricanMecca. This realm teems with countless varieties of coral and other reef denizens setting the underworld ocean ablaze with their vibrant colors. On shore, you might have the good fortune of watching rare green and hawksbill turtles hatching from their sandy nests and making their way to the sea during the holidaying months from June to September. Your travel around the island will be accompanied by the sights of many small birds and terrestrial faunas that abound here such as antelopes, monkeys and wild pigs to name a few. Your exploration will be rewarded by a saltwater pool that has a strange denizen, stringless, upside down jellyfish. Add a fun picnic to your trip on the Funguni Sandbank that appears at low tide. The receding tide leaves behind many sea creatures in rock pools where countless seabirds flock for a treat. A boat ride from Ras Mbisi Lodge can take you to Juani Island to view the ruins of the 13th century Kua settlement or you could visit the flying foxes or fruit bats of Popo Park. Stroll over to the Chole Village to get culturally immersed, and you also might get to take a lesson in dhow building. Optionally, you can also go out fishing off the Mafia East African coastline on a dhow in search of marlins, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, dorado and many others.

The Zanzibar Stone Town tour guide was superlative. He was outstanding and gave us undivided attention. We felt that was great value and to be escorted round the market place and slave stations was like walking in a living museum.

We have returned from our African adventure and would like to thank you very much for your part in making this such a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to time the Great Migration from the Serengeti, which was amazing.

Ras Nungwi was a beautiful property, the pristine white beach not more than forty feet from our lovely room, the Indian Ocean sublime. Raza, it was the vacation of a lifetime, again, thanks so much.
