Mount Karisimbi Trek Guide For Volcanoes Park

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Safari Prices, Reviews, Maps, Photos, Videos & Room Rate Guide For Volcanoes

Created by violent eruptions in the Albertine Rift region, Mount Karisimbi is one of the eight volcanic peaks in the area. The highest mountain in the Virunga Range, it towers at a height of 4507 meters above sea level. Holding the distinction of sixth-highest mountain in Africa, Karisimbi straddles the border between southwestern Rwanda and the northeastern expanses of the Democratic Republic of Congo. On your hiking vacation in the region, you will learn that the peak takes its name from the Kinyarwanda word “amasimbi,” meaning "white shell." This is because the summit often sports a white cap of sleet and hail, thanks to frequent storms.

Those who choose to hike to the top of the mountain can expect the trip to take 2 days. On day 1, you will approach the mountain from the east on the Mount Bisoke side. After hiking for about 6 hours you will reach the first base camp, where you will spend the night. This camp is located at a height of 3700 meters, so guests need to be in excellent physical shape to navigate the trail. The trek can be slippery in places, but you can request that a porter accompany you to help you carry the equipment you’ve brought along.

Hikers will reach the summit of the mountain on day 2. Along the way, you can spot some of the 178 species of birds the reserve is famous for (read more on Rwanda birdwatching). As you ascend the mountain, you will notice that the landscape changes; close to the base are dense forests, while at the top is the bare volcanic mud. During the hike up the mountain you need to be prepared for the trail being muddy in places. At the end of your highland travel, you will be surely overwhelmed by breathtaking panoramas, with Nyiragongo to the west, Bisoke to the east, and Mikeno to the north.
