GUIDE ON MARA WEST IN KENYA
In a tranquil remote corner of western Masai Mara, sprawled on the slopes of the Oloololo Escarpment and frequented by many resident herds of zebras, impalas and gazelles, is the Mara West Camp. An economy accommodation, this camp allows guests traveling in this African outback, an exciting adventure where varied herbivores graze in the lawns around you, bush babies call in the night and songbirds fill the air with fused harmony. The glorious landscape of the Mara Triangle with its many denizens, terrestrial and avian spreads below you where you might also chance to witness the Mara Wildebeest Migration as it passes through the plains from July to October. Two country-like cottages built in a style reminiscent of the early explorers serves as lounge and dining areas. In keeping with eco-friendly values, the accommodation uses power generated by solar panels supplemented with inverter batteries and also generators for charging electronics. Mara West has a collection of bungalows, tents and bandas designed to suit the taste and adventure style of non-frill AfricanMecca guest vacationing in the great plains of Kenya. The 8 chalets offering picturesque views are each made of a permutation of canvas and brick with hardwood floors. While the walls of the chalets are made of canvas with zip-up windows that can be covered with canvas flaps, their entrances are double French doors with glass panels. Comfortable, handmade cedar furniture graces the chalets that include two queen size beds each. The en-suite bathrooms are permanent structures and include the amenities of a budget establishment complete with bathrobes and hot water for showers. One of the chalets is especially furbished for the comfort of honeymooning couples and includes a four-poster double bed, al fresco shower, exclusive patio and a quiet deck on the side for private sunbathing sessions. If you would prefer the authentic, basic safari experience of staying in a tent during your tour of Masai Mara Game Reserve, the camp also offers 8 semi-permanent tents on an elevated wooden platform, each including two double beds and the standard amenities of the chalets. The adjoining bathroom at the back of the tent has a solid stone structure. The eighth tent serves as a honeymoon suite tent. Mara West also has 20 pseudo African bandas with thatch roofs and a canvas body allowing you to minimally experience local traditional living styles. Round in shape with conical roofs, the bandas, each have twin beds with shared bathroom and showering facilities that are located within a short distance. Mara West Camp has two venues for your meals with formal and informal dining options. Their Kingfisher Dining Lounge offers modest, buffet-style meals that include modest dishes complemented with soups, salads, breads, appetizing desserts, and hot and cold beverages. You can also have open-air meals on the spacious dining patio next door. Have the ultimate safari adventure on your photo trip in the great plains of Africa with exploratory game drives in a custom-built safari vehicle with an experienced AfricanMecca guide on board. You could spot the Big Five of Africa and some of the over 450 species of birds that Masai Mara Game Reserve hosts. Delight in the in-depth knowledge your guide possesses as he relates with pride the many enigmas of the land and explore the flora with its many amazing healing features on bush walks. Take an aerial observation in a balloon safari to view the striking topography of Masai Mara and its inhabitants. Finally, visit your true hosts of the bush, the Maasai at their village for a cultural experience on your ethnic-engrossed holiday in Eastern Africa.
