GUIDE ON KEEKOROK LODGE IN KENYA
One of the first lodges to open for guests touring Kenya, Keekorok Lodge, combines elements of Africa and the colonial era in part. The rebuilt reception with its bamboo and tree trunk decor is every bit Africa while the lounge and Chui Bar with its comfortable chairs, beamed ceiling and hardwood floors has a yesteryear country feel. Since this economy lodge is located in the path of the Great Wildebeest Migration, you will chance to view this marvel that occurs from July through October. The lodge also has an outdoor lounge area where you can relax under patio parasols and enjoy the serenity of the landscape around you. Lush manicured lawns dotted with trees form the setting for the 99 rooms the lodge offers (read more on where else to stay in Masai Mara on your migration safari). A stone walkway leads up to your room lodging. As you head to your room in the evenings, you could encounter a hippo or a zebra standing on the path, which is why a Maasai escort fortified with a torch and bush wisdom, escorts you safely. The lodge is not fenced and wildlife roam freely so you might also spot a few gazelles or warthogs feeding on the greens alongside fierce baboons. Keekorok also has a free form swimming pool with lounge chairs where family with kids can spend time on their bonding vacation in East Africa under careful supervision of the parent. When traveling in Masai Mara National Reserve with AfricanMecca, you could stay in one of the Standard Rooms in blocks of cottages or the individual Chalet Rooms. Each of the room has a double bed or twin beds complete with mosquito netting. Safe deposit boxes, telephone and Wi-Fi services along with apparatus for making tea and coffee is also provided. The en-suite bathroom comes with a bathroom scale, hair dryer, bathrobe and basic toiletries for your use. You will also have your own patio furnished with safari chairs for a quiet afternoon of relaxation with perhaps, an impala in the garden to keep you company. The Chalet Rooms are more spacious and include the amenities of the Standard Rooms. Executive and Presidential suites are also available. Though, you might find that some rooms somewhat lack in maintenance and need repair work considering over 200 guests can be accommodated at any given day. Keekorok Lodge serves buffet meals in their Orpul Restaurant. They also have a live pasta station for lunch and a selection of Mongolian cuisine at dinnertime on some days. Some guests might not find the food to their liking as the accommodation caters to the tourist masses and the restaurant tends to get too crowded at meal times. You also have the option of private dining beside the pool or in the bush, but you might have to place your request in advance and charges may apply. An elevated walkway leads up to the covered deck and you might meet a vervet monkey walking behind you. You can also spend time on their viewing deck that overlooks a natural pool. Buffaloes and hippos wallow in the pool while other terrestrial animals and birds stop by for a drink. Explore Masai Mara on your bush trip in south-western Kenya in custom-equipped vehicles accompanied by an experienced AfricanMecca guide who will amaze you with his knowledge of the many mammals and avian-life you will encounter. Go on bush walks for a close-to-nature experience and on balloon rides for birds’ eye-view of the wondrous world stretching below you. Also, take the time for a culturally enriching tour of the nearby Maasai village as the perfect conclusion to your ethnic-rich holiday in mother Africa.
