GUIDE ON RICHARD'S FOREST CAMP IN KENYA
Richard's Forest Camp stopped camp operations in 2016. The camp owners, Robert's Family, are now concentrating on their accommodation in Mara North called Richard's River Camp.A beautiful section of the private Ol Choro Oiroua Conservancy with its lush green trees neighboring the Masai Mara National Reserve hosts the deluxe Richard’s Forest camp, a wonderful location for your bush stay-over while touring Kenya with AfricanMecca. Sightings of canine animals like lions, leopards and other felines around the edges of the camp are a common occurrence. You might also spot giraffes picking off the leaves of Acacia trees or hippos munching on the grasses as you lounge on the patio of the common area of the camp. A delightful lounge room with wood ceiling built on a flattened stone surface, its interior seems to be lifted out of an old English home with its rock-lined fireplace, wooden mantelpiece, carved tables and plush sofas. Curtains billow in the breeze from the canvas-blind windows while lamps and potted plants add to the charm. All the same, the essence of Africa is evident in the pictures and other adornments, and the smiling faces of your Maasai hosts as they look after you on your authentic Masai Mara bush trip. The common area also includes the dining section of the camp where well-cooked meals are presented to you with care. For an al fresco dining experience while on your culinary vacation in Africa, the camp arranges for meals in the open air under the verdant shade of the trees. As evening approaches, traditional lanterns are lit and arranged around the tents to create a classic romantic and yesteryear feel. Enjoy sundowner drinks around a campfire and candlelit dinners under a blanket of twinkling stars. Later you will be escorted to your tented room, one of the 8 the camp has. In keeping with the pulse of Richard’s Forest Camp, the tents reflect an eclectic decor in the hand-crafted wooden dressers, hanging frame, carved coffee tables with safari chairs and woven rugs. Some of the beds are made of classic wrought iron while others with wood and you could choose from rooms with either a double or twin beds. Families or groups of three traveling in Masai Mara Game Reserve with AfricanMecca can opt for the tents with three beds. You will love the open shower with only bamboo walls for privacy and the al fresco stand-alone bathtubs. The en-suite bathroom also comes with a vanity basin counter and open foldable racks for your things. Solar panels generate the electricity to light your tent and the wide veranda is perfect for leisurely afternoon siestas when you return from your game drives. Grazing animals and rare birds like the Narina Trogon that you see around your camp are only a few of the rich diversity of avian and terrestrial fauna that Masai Mara supports. As you cruise along in a custom-equipped safari vehicle, you could chance to spot the Big Five of Africa. You could also view the passage of the wildebeest and zebras as they migrate through the Mara reserve in the months from July to October. The Maasai guide accompanying you is well-versed in animal behavior and their habits having learnt about them from a lifetime of experiences. Dip into his trove of knowledge and be entranced with what you can learn. Also, go on nature walks and the flora of Masai Mara will enchant you with their healing powers along with the insects, amphibian and reptiles that will translate the finer wonders of the smaller things in life (read more on when is the best time to go to Masai Mara for an authentic Kenya bush safari). Complement your wilderness holiday in East Africa by visiting your Maasai hosts at their home in the village. And come away culturally enriched by their ancient lore and fascinating rituals and customs.
