GUIDE ON MARA RIVER LODGE IN KENYA
Mara River Lodge is an economical-friendly accommodation that is located in the Lemek Conservancy on the outskirts of the northern side of Masai Mara National Reserve. It was formerly known as David Livingstone Safari Resort until it changed ownership hands in 2013. The 80 guest rooms in varied blocks offer our budget-conscious guests a clean and comfortable place to rest and relax during their action-filled tour of wild Kenya; though expect to have an average of 160 guests on full occupancy days. The 78 standard rooms and 2 suites have a hotel-like atmosphere that is created by dark wood floors, black and white accents, mosquito-netting canopied beds and modern lighting. The en-suite bathroom features cream tile floors, single vanity with white vessel sink, mirror, flush toilet and shower. The two-bedroom sleeping arrangement of the suites is perfect for family vacations in Masai Mara, as well as for friends of four that are traveling together. All of the rooms and suites are clean and well-maintained, but some guests may find the rooms a bit small for their needs. All of the rooms face the river, and you may wish to choose a room that is closest to the hippo pool; though we recommend you bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper to diminish the hippo grunts and snorts. We advise AfricanMecca guests that the lodge has no internet or telephone service as per last check. Electricity is powered by a timed generator and is available for a few hours during the day and night. Facilities include non-frill spa with massage, curio shop, swimming pool, bar and dining area. Your days at Mara River Lodge are filled with pure adventure as you journey into one of the world’s greatest wilderness areas – Masai Mara Game Reserve and its surrounding conservancies. The outback is known internationally as a high density and diversity safari destination that offers an abundance of flora and fauna. You meet up your guide who will describe the awaited experiences from your morning game drive. Wildlife roams freely between the public reserve and the surrounding conservancy, so you have a chance to see many of the same resident species in both locations. Your exploratory Masai Mara safari begins when you climb aboard a shared game vehicle and head out into the bush to discover the natural wonders of this biosphere! A family of elephants gathers at the edge of the river to drink while hippos and crocodiles peek above the surface of the water. In the distance, giraffes, warthogs, topis, impalas and other herbivores forage and graze. In the distance, a pride of lions lazes in the morning sun, and even further away is a lone cheetah perched on an outcrop strategizing its next meal hunt. These are just some of the animals that you see during your dream trip to Kenya! From July to October, these animals are joined by over one and half million wildebeests along with thousands of zebras, gazelles and elands that migrate through the area each year. As your hunger sets in, you return to the lodge for an adequate breakfast, after which you have some time to browse the curio shop, interact with other guests and catch up on your reading. Lunch is served mid-day, and then you have free time to cool-off in the pool. Alternatively, you may to take a stroll to explore the Mara River along the property and later a quick siesta. We can also arrange a private bush lunch in the Lemek Conservancy. In the later afternoon, take a game drive through the conservancy followed by an optional sundowner and dinner at the lodge. As stars fill the sky, you gather around the fire with other guests to share bush holiday stories of adventure and intrigue, or you may also take an optional night game drive in the conservancy. AfricanMecca also recommends that you stay at Mara River Lodge for at least three days so that you can partake an early morning hot air balloon ride over the vast plains of Masai Mara.
