GUIDE ON MARA LEISURE CAMP IN KENYA
On the edge of the Talek River is a riverine woodland with lush tropical vegetation, and nestled in this nook of tranquil greenery is the Mara Leisure Camp. Even as you step into the reception-cum-lounge area with its rough-hewn stone floors, high ceilings supported with wooden poles and walls adorned with beautiful Maasai curios and artifacts, you are immersed in the spirit of East Africa. Located on the eastern periphery of Masai Mara National Reserve, the camp with its choices of both cottages and tented rooms are ideal for the budget-conscious vacationer in Kenya (read more on where else to stay in Masai Mara). Hot water is powered with solar panels and camp electricity is powered by the mains power along with generators as a backup. Complimentary Wi-Fi service is available in the lounge and dining areas. Offering in all 25 rooms, the camp has twenty-two tents, of which nine are Jumbo Tents with double beds while thirteen are Nyati Tents that face the river and have twin queen-size beds. Each of the canvas tents is erected on a raised deck with steps leading up. Semi-permanent in nature, some of the tents have wooden entrances while others have canvas panels that can be rolled up. Mesh windows allow cool breezes, daylight and scents of the wilderness and can be covered with canvas flaps for privacy should AfricanMecca boarders need it. The tents have wooden floors complete with mosquito netting on beds for your protection. The attached bathroom is at the rear of the tent and features a bath, shower, twin basins and basic toiletries. The tents also have seating arrangements inside and on the deck where you can lounge and revel in the serenity of your surroundings on your ‘Out Of Africa trip.’ If you are traveling to Masai Mara with family and young children, you can opt for the Jumbo Tents 3 & 4. These tents are interlinked and feature a private lounge area. But if you would like to stay in a lodge-like structure, you can opt for the one of the three Jamii Cottages on offer. These cottages feature two rooms, one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. Mosquito nets are provided here too and the safari-themed furnishings add a special charm. Each cottage also has a spacious bathroom and patio. Mara Leisure has a dining area with arrangements for having your meals on its spacious covered verandah or indoors in the adjoining building. They offer adequate food including vegetarian options complemented by choice wines from their own cellar. There is also an indoor bar but if you would prefer to lounge beside the swimming pool or take a refreshing dip between your game drives on your peaceful slow-paced tour of south-western Kenya, you can order cocktails to accompany your relaxation. Awaken each morning to the sound of singing birds and cowbells as the Maasai lead their herds for grazing grounds in surrounding wilderness pastures. You will find a custom-built safari vehicle with your AfricanMecca guide waiting to take you on your game drive. He is experienced and well versed in the behavior and movements of animals and will direct an adventurous expedition where you can spot the kings of Masai Mara, the lions. Also, view other predators like cheetahs, hyenas and leopards along with herbivores like buffaloes, elephants, zebras, giraffes, waterbuck, warthogs and many more. Though, the most spectacular sight of the Masai Mara Game Reserve is the Great Migration of the wildebeests and zebras in the months from July to October. You can also go on safari nature walks and balloon safaris for more wondrous experiences. For a cultural experience on your ethnic holiday in East Africa, visit the Maasai villages close by.
