IL Ngwesi Lodge - Laikipia

The IL Ngwesi (pronounced eel ngu-we-zee) Lodge, a complete and genuine ecologically friendly accommodation, is situated adjacent to the Ngare Ndare River on the edge of the Mukogodo Hills and boasts commanding panoramic views across Northern Kenya. IL Ngwesi is a small paradise, perched between peak and plain, possesses a magic, which cannot fail to touch anyone who is lucky enough to experience it.

IL Ngwesi possesses an original and striking beauty and although the lodge was only officially opened in December 1996, and has relied solely on marketing by word of mouth, its average occupancy level has been running at 60%.

The staff involved in the construction and subsequent running of the lodge are all group ranch members and the project therefore provides an increase in local employment.

IL Ngwesi Lodge was awarded the prestigious British Airways Best Eco-tourism Destination Award in 1997, Best Self-catering Camp by readers of Travel Magazine, Kenya's leading travel magazine and The Equator Initiative Award at the world Summit in Johannesburg in 2002. IL Ngwesi Lodge has also become the role model for upcoming community eco-lodges throughout the East African region.

Driving by road IL Ngwesi Lodge takes about 6 hours from Nairobi with access through Lewa or Borana. Alternatively, by private charter (Boskovic Air Charters or Tropic Air) direct into IL N'gwesi airstrip. By scheduled service (Air Kenya) daily from Nairobi to Lewa, then by an hour and a half road transfer.
