GUIDE ON TARANGIRE SAFARI LODGE IN TANZANIA
Tarangire Safari Lodge was the first to be built in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. It enjoys an unblemished reputation as a cost-conscious base for an adventurous African holiday. From its perch, high on a bluff facing the sunrise, it enjoys one of the nicest views over the Tarangire National Park, across a meandering river, over endless savannah lightly wooded with graceful acacia and monolithic baobab trees, to the distant blue outline of the Great African Rift Valley escarpment and further, to Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro, floating ethereally amongst wisps of early morning cloud on a crisp clear day. Sited in the north of the park, the safari lodge is superbly situated to show off vast herds of elephants, 2,500 that roam Tarangire. But even the elephants are dwarfed by the beauty of the dozens of enormous and incredible baobab trees, often thousands of years old. Groups of disdainful giraffe stretch their long necks to graze the tops of the acacia trees. The Tarangire Park contains the one of the highest diversities and densities of animal life in Tanzania, seasonally changing as shallow soda lakes along the rift valley dry up, driving game and predators to the permanent marshes and rivers of the Tarangire. You can reach Tarangire Safari Lodge by road from Arusha, a two hour journey to the gate, and a delightful Tanzanian safari in itself, or you can fly to Kuro Airstrip with prearranged land transport on arrival via AfricanMecca for an hour’s trip through Tarangire to the lodge.
Accommodation At Tarangire Safari LodgeAccommodation at Tarangire Safari Lodge comprises of 40 cool and airy rooms, 25 of them thatched canvas twin and 10 double tents on stone plinths, and 5 family sized stone built rondavels. Most central facilities are accessible to AfricanMecca guests on wheelchair, including three of the roomy tents with fabulous valley views. All are solidly built as it is not unusual to encounter families of elephants placidly wandering in the camp grounds, their huge bulk and lugubrious expressions belying their gentle nature. Their proximity adds a charming memory of your vacation visit in Tanzania. All the rooms offer en-suite bathroom facilities with solar hot water showers, and all have large, curtained meshed windows with insect proofing, with beautiful ethnic linen fabrics and plain wooden furniture. Large, shaded verandahs allow comfortable viewing of the nearest water-hole where an amazingly diverse animal population gathers every evening to drink, bathe and play. Electrical power is only available for a few hours, morning, and evening, so you are advised to have flashlights for evening use and remember warm clothes for evening cooler weather. There is an enormous central dining, lounge with hand-crafted wooden furniture recycled from old wooden Swahili dhows, and a bar complex with extensive outdoor viewing deck. A large swimming pool and a children’s splash pool are popular facilities when safari traveling in Africa with families. In the main lodge, there is battery charging facility and paid Wi-Fi as well as the Baobab Boutique which stocks craft items made by Tanzanian women from surrounding districts.
Safari At Tarangire Safari LodgeA Tarangire Safari Lodge Safari is a rich experience at any time of year (read more on the best times to visit Tarangire based on your interests). The long wet season heralds the breeding cycle of thousands of wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra and many kinds of antelope as well as hundreds of birds, enough to convert any run-of-the-mill big five photographer to an infatuated twitcher entranced by fantastic avian life-forms, from giant kori bustards to tiny sunbirds, whirring bundles of jewel-bright feathers. The dry season brings a mass gathering of thirsty refugees along watercourses or emerald green swamps, where they are attended by a retinue of predators. Day-time game-viewing activity tours of Tarangire are conducted in four-wheel drive vehicles, purpose designed with comfortable seating, pop-up roof, onboard refreshments and radio contact between AfricanMecca guides to share and track the most riveting action. Early morning finds predators like lion, leopard homeward bound and other mammals wandering in the cool breeze before seeking shade through the heat of the day. Walking safaris and night safaris are also popular in specific areas of Tarangire, and bookable with prior arrangement when staying at Tarangire Safari Lodge. Even before you leave the lodge complex, tiny dik-diks venture onto terraces. Oddly endearing warthog root about the walkways and vervet monkeys look out for mischief. Personal, close yet safe viewing of the wildlife is a life-changing experience, as is a visit to the homes of the indigenous people like the Maasai community. There is so much to assimilate on a tour in Tanzania that you will never forget.
Dining At Tarangire Safari LodgeAll fruit and vegetables are delivered fresh to Tarangire Safari Lodge from farms on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and are prepared on site. The day begins with delicious Tanzanian tea or coffee served at your table with hot cinnamon rolls. A breakfast buffet features a range of fruit, bread, cheese and cereals with varied egg options and pancake dishes prepared to order while you wait. Buffet style lunch comprises of soups, vegetable salads, and various hot or cold platters with fruit salads or pastries for dessert. Tea and coffee are available all day in the comfortable bar or main lounge where you can borrow a book or newspaper, and settle at large tables on cozy couches, all made from weathered hardwood salvaged from coastal beach wrecks in Tanzania. The end of day African wildlife safari ritual welcomed by AfricanMecca guests is enacted between 6.00-7.00 pm, sundowner cocktails at sunset feature complimentary savory snacks on a magnificent viewing terrace with views of the meandering river and tree-spangled panoramic plains spread out before you as the landscape flares bright gold before the pink sky gives way to millions of bright stars on a background of deepest violet. The dining room has a frieze of bird silhouettes, roosters and guinea fowl on the window sills. Dinner is a three-course culinary tour of Africa, with a fine range of beers, cordials and South African wines to order. Food is served traditionally in individual steel pots supported on stones and kept hot by candle flames.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
