GUIDE ON LAKE BURUNGE TENTED CAMP IN TANZANIA

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Lake Burunge Tented Camp

Lake Burunge Tented Camp is situated in a delightful area of a lake, plains, forest and rocky kopjes, a 45 minutes’ drive from Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. Tarangire is a popular destination for small groups and independent travelers on holiday in Africa. Extending along the side of an elevated ridge 1,000 feet above sea level in over 60,000 acres of tribal concessionary land, this Tanganyika Wilderness accommodation enjoys glorious views over Lake Burunge (aka as Lake Burungi) in the middle distance and blue glimpses of the African Rift Valley Escarpment, Mount Meru and even, floating on dawn mists, far away Kilimanjaro on a clear day.

The land belongs to the Maasai people who contribute to, and benefit from tourist activities in the area, which provide employment, market outlets and funds for wildlife conservation and village improvement projects. The surrounding area is also home to the tribal villages of Mbuwge, farmers and weavers, who welcome you to share their cultural riches when you tour the Tarangire surrounds. Wildlife abounds in the immediate area, a game corridor between the seasonal Lake Manyara and the permanent river waters along the safari route into Tarangire Park.

Accompanied by Maasai guides, you may wander among elephant, zebra and hundreds of wonderful birds, including the Paradise Whydah, a long-tailed, colorful exotic that lays its eggs, cuckoo style, in the nests of abundant pretty little Green-winged Pytilia. The camp is an ideal choice for AfricanMecca guests who want a lake-side value African safari experience without the inconvenience of a very large accommodation or also actually roughing it though there is a short distance to cover to get to Tarangire or even Manyara.

Accommodation At Lake Burunge Tented Camp

At Lake Burunge Tented Camp, 20 tents and 10 lodge rooms offer twin beds, king size double beds or triples in canvas structures supported on strong, stilted decks and protected by pitched thatched roofs in a picturesque, rustic configuration. Each room is light, spacious and airy with mosquito nets and enjoys its own private verandah deck with table and safari chairs overlooking woodland and the lake just below the ridge of a hill.

There are en-suite bathrooms with inbuilt showers, but, since tap-water is piped from the lake, you are advised that it is neither for drinking nor tooth-brushing. As in many Tanzanian tour accommodations, (where to stay in Tarangire) bottled water is supplied for this purpose. Solar power is limited so a good flashlight would be useful to carry.

The main building is open-sided on a raised wooden deck. A vaulted wooden thatched roof supported on raw tree trunk pillars provides a comfortable dining, lounge and bar area with incredible views across the plains and lake. There is also a power bar to recharge camera batteries. It is helpful to label them with your name. A resident masseuse is also on hand.

An ideal base for a companionable Tarangire trip with AfricanMecca, Lake Burunge Tented Camp offers unrivalled opportunities to experience close quarters with native wildlife, from dik-diks bounding on the hillside and geckos frolicking in your thatch, to thousands of birds flitting through the trees, fighting for insects around the camp and serenading you throughout the life-throbbing African night.

Safari At Lake Burunge Tented Camp

Guided walks and game drives are favored Tarangire activities on safari in Tanzania with AfricanMecca, with cultural visits to local communities, traditional farmers tending their fields of sunflowers, maize and rice, with goats and cattle pastured close to their low, lashed together, stick, coconut thatch and reed homes. Some of the surviving members of Tanzania’s tribal community continue on with their specific ways of life and traditions.

Game-viewing is best done on four wheels as there are more than 1,000 square miles of National Park, where from June onwards elephants, estimated at around 2,500, one of the largest concentrations to be found on an African tour, dig for underground streams as water dries up elsewhere in the Great African Rift Valley.

The diversity of habitats gives rise to surprise encounters of the weird kind. Honey badgers leap on the unwary from giant mounds of red cement, the abandoned homes of termite colonies millions strong. Rivers and marshes form breeding grounds and migratory havens for over 500 birds, including the heaviest flying bird, the Kori Bustard, the heaviest flightless ostrich, the most ancient hornbill, the smallest bee-eaters, the most melodious Rattling Cisticola and the saddle-billed stork, looking like a cartoon character with its black head and neck and long, red, black and yellow bill.

All these treasures and more are waiting at Lake Burunge Tented Camp to be collected amongst your safari to Tanzania with memories of a lifetime -- from hooved herbivores to canine fauna.

Dining At Lake Burunge Tented Camp

Food at Lake Burunge Tented Camp is simple and abundant, a combination of European and local dishes. The latter are tasty, spicy and naturally adapted to the climate. Hot food and peeled fresh fruit are recommended for travelers in Africa. All ingredients are produced in local communities and are fresh, usually organically grown. Buffet meals are served in the dining room, or you may dine on your own verandah or take picnics by arrangement. Special diets can also be catered on request.

Delicious early morning tea or coffee can be brought to your room with a wake-up call on request in good time for an early start to your Lake Burunge Tented Camp safari into Tarangire. AfricanMecca recommended to set out at dawn to reach Tarangire National Park before the heat of the day. On your journey towards the park in your comfortable, customized vehicle with four wheel drive and pop-up observation roof, your knowledgeable guide will discuss your main interests and maximize your chances of success by 2-way radio contact with others in the area.

On board refreshments allow you to make the most of your Tanzanian vacation, staying out all day in the fascinating riverine landscape, teeming with wildlife. Back at the camp, guided walks guarantee encounters with zebra and other wild residents. For your safety, you are not permitted to walk alone, but will always be accompanied by armed Maasai guards who will also escort you back to your accommodation after dinner.
