GUIDE ON ECOSCIENCE CENTER AND LUXURY LODGE IN TANZANIA
The Ecoscience Center and Luxury Lodge in Tarangire, Tanzania, combines two important objectives in one unique project. It offers exceptional research opportunities and excellent African holiday accommodation in pristine wilderness surroundings in the Tarangire Conservation Area, just outside the Tarangire National Park. This 80 hectare site is on Maasai land in an area in the North East known locally as the “Mini Serengeti Plain” because of its proximity to major wildlife migration corridors. Elephants, wildebeest, zebra and other ungulates, followed by their predators, cross these plains twice yearly, in search of forage and water. For this reason, the Ecoscience Center and Luxury Lodge offers a temporary home to international students and researchers in the science centre, supported by NGO sponsors such as Ecoscience Social and Scientific (ESS). Universities and individual scientists are invited to submit research proposals, and future scholarships are envisaged. In keeping with Conservation Area policy, it enables local Maasai communities, such as the nearby village of Mswakini Juu, to benefit from Tanzanian wildlife safari initiatives and to contribute to the welfare of indigenous wildlife. There is also an architect–designed boutique lodge accommodation as part of the science center for enthusiastic AfricanMecca guests, eager to learn more about the ecology of Tarangire and to enjoy an informed wilderness experience. It also gives visitors an unrivalled level of originality, combining academic objectives with sophisticated standards of design, cuisine and entertainment.
Accommodation At Ecoscience Center and Luxury LodgeThe guest lodge accommodation is completely separate from the Ecoscience Center. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the premises. The Ecoscience Center comprises 10 spacious tents, the largest of which provide a restaurant and conference room with adjoining library. The remaining eight are accommodation tents with work stations, desks and Internet connections as well as bed with en-suite bathrooms. There will be a mobile unit for field work. Designed by Spanish architect Maria Rodriguez-Carreño Villangomez, the striking boutique luxurious lodge is a minimalistic concept of a Maasai homestead rondavels. 6 guest rooms, each 60 meters square, have a 30 square meter terraces with spectacular views, which can also be enjoyed from every bed, facing out across the valley to Radilan Hill. Each room has sofa, office work desk, wardrobe, double bed with an en-suite bathroom (read more on where to stay in Tarangire). As an ecological flagship project, sustainability is a key factor, and water is a prime utility; water savers are therefore installed on all faucets and showers. Internet connection is available. There is also a small shop. Disabled visitors are welcome, but there is regrettably no provision for children. Guests are enjoined to remain within the visitors’ area unless accompanied by Maasai guards or other authorized personnel. A minimum 2-night stay is recommended by AfricanMecca for an Ecoscience Center and Luxury Lodge tour experience in Tarangire, in order to benefit from the in-depth knowledge of the scientists, whose work is directly supported by the boutique lodge. If there are suitable projects in hand, visitors may assist the researchers or even stay with them if there are vacant rooms.
Safari At Ecoscience Center and Luxury LodgeAmongst the many activities available on an AfricanMecca vacation in Tanzania, are hot-air balloon safaris, cultural visits to Maasai villages, and Tarangire National Park tours in custom built game-viewing vehicles. However, it is recommended that you make the most of the special qualities of this unusual Africa tour accommodation by spending time in the scientific community, taking advantage of their expertise to obtain a deeper understanding of the sights you see on the guided walks and night drives in the vicinity. Guided morning walks will enable close encounters with such wildlife gems as graceful, bounding dik-diks, confusingly striped Burchell’s zebra, giraffe, eland, impala, oryx and hosts of other hooved and horned ungulates, as well as elephant who roam the area in herds of a hundred or more. These animals form a core asset as a source of tourist income from holidays in Tanzania, and a means of preserving the environment for other species and for pastoralists, by the systematic grazing of the antelopes and the ability of elephants to gouge out waterholes from underground rivers. Night drives are a privilege in the area which is not governed by Tanzania National Park regulations, so that in addition to elephant and giraffe, you can become acquainted with such rarities as crested porcupine, scaly pangolin and aardvark anteaters, Small-eared galago (bush baby), and such predators as leopard, spotted and rare striped hyenas, and possibly even African hunting dogs. Many of these animals are vulnerable and may never be seen again without the help of the tour to Tanzania initiatives like the Ecoscience Center and Luxury Lodge.
Dining At Ecoscience Center and Luxury LodgeDining at the Ecoscience Center and Luxury Lodge is a very unique experience for travelers in Africa. The guest restaurant relaxation area, strikingly designed to marry ethnic simplicity with monolithic pillars and an eclectic array of artifacts, combines legless block tables and seating banks in colors of earth and flame with comfortable leather arm chairs, carved wooden chairs with native heads, beadwork, and game tables for chess and mancala. A bar, fireplace and a grand piano complete the effect. The dining area features simple safari seats at intimate tables where the best of French, Belgian and Mediterranean cuisine will be served combined with African dishes. Fresh ingredients are produced on local farms. The well-stocked bar adds an international flourish. Aromatic morning tea or coffee will be brought to your room before a choice of fruits, cereals, breads or cooked breakfast dishes are served in the dining area. A selection of hot or cold platters is available for lunch, or a picnic can be taken if a full day Tarangire trip is planned on your tour itinerary with AfricanMecca. Afternoon tea is available in the lounge where, before sunset, your host, himself a scientist and musician, will play a sundowner medley of romantic melodies on the grand piano as you sip sundowner cocktails in true African safari style. After fine dining European and African style, guests are treated to a Maasai cultural performance before being accompanied safely back to their rooms for the night.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
