GUIDE ON RUAHA RIVER LODGE IN TANZANIA
Ruaha River Lodge occupies a prime site for an active-adventure safari vacations in Africa, beside the Great Ruaha River with stunning views over the rock-tumbled river bed and surrounding miombo woodland as well as rocky tors and the distant Ruaha Escarpment. It is owned by the Fox family who are dedicated to the conservation of Ruaha and eager to share their knowledge and love of the area. If you must choose only one off-beat park to visit on your AfricanMecca tour in Tanzania, the little known Ruaha National Park but the largest in Tanzania offers spectacular, constantly changing scenery and a tremendous concentration of diverse flora and fauna including over 14,000 plant species. It is a bird-watchers’ dream with over 570 avian species and a photographer’s delight with large concentrations of elephant and buffalo, hippo and crocodile, with prides of lions and packs of endangered African painted dogs. In an area slightly larger than Slovenia or Wales, much of which is accessible only with exertion, and therefore largely unspoiled; you will also find such rarities as goat-like Roan and glossy Sable antelope as well as the amazing spiral-horned Greater kudu. From Dar es Salaam, a two hour flight brings you to the nearest airstrip where you will be met and taken on an eye-opening trip through Ruaha to the lodge. En-route, the diverse landscape holds troops of baboons, extended elephant families, solitary giraffes, herds of buffalo, groups of zebra, roaring lions, wild pigs with tails down and cute warthogs running with tails erect like aerial pennants.
Accommodation At Ruaha River LodgeRuaha River Lodge consists of 28 stone-built thatched bandas which blend into their riverside surroundings, commanding a delightful panorama of unmatched wilderness worthy of an Africa travel fantasy. Each airy Banda has a large viewing verandah, bedroom with double or twin beds and an option to add more if required. The lounge is a cool haven with large twin sofas and easy chairs. The en-suite bathroom has a flush toilet, hand wash basin and a shower with solar-heated hot water. Drinking water is supplied separately. Windows are protected by insect mesh and generator powered electricity for lighting and battery charging is available until 2230-2300 hours. Hurricane lanterns are also provided in the evening. A huge, well-designed wood and thatch central lodge amidst rock boulders sits high above the river, with a long bar, large restaurant and a spacious lounge with comfortable leather armchairs. Everywhere, you can sit and drink in uninterrupted views along the river, and its backdrop of grassland and hills whilst enjoying the antics of surrounding wildlife. Elephants curl their snakelike trunks up to tear foliage from acacia trees. They have also been known to help themselves to a tasty morsel of thatch from a banda roof. Hippos wallow in the part-clear and part blue-gray waters of the river. Klipspringer, hyrax and mongooses dart amongst the boulders, and agile dik-diks bound on the hillside. In the evening, a river bank campfire completes the unforgettable African safari trip ambience with thrilling verbal flashbacks on the day’s AfricanMecca wildlife experience in Ruaha.
Safari At Ruaha River LodgeA walking safari with a Tanzanian armed ranger and guide in Ruaha will familiarize you with the sounds and smells of the African wilderness: the dung and spoor that tell of the recent presence of potentially precarious wildlife, as well as the cameo images that make for delightful memories of your Ruaha River Lodge Safari. Beautiful butterflies, beetles and lizards flit and scuttle across your path. Hamerkop with counterweighted heads like nodding donkeys, and barbets duetting on an abandoned termite hills give a taste of the bizarre and amusing variety of avian entertainment. Fly camping in Ruaha enables active AfricanMecca visitors to immerse themselves in wilderness, trekking like the explorers of an earlier time and sleeping in unpolluted darkness under a sky sparkling with millions of diamond points of light with a bright moon. Your guide will take you by 4x4 people carrier equipped with 2-way radio to show you the hippo and crocodile pool further along the Great Ruaha River. You may see African dogs working together to bring down an antelope, or baboons intimidating a hungry leopard with its bark like alarm calls. Have a bonnet lunch from a tray over the jeep engine, safely alert for lions reclining almost invisibly in the golden grass. Life is harsh in the bush, every creature fighting for a precarious existence from one hour to the next if not minutes. On tour in Africa, in the remote wilds of Ruaha, you will value every moment, alive as never before.
Dining At Ruaha River LodgeFood at Ruaha River Lodge is healthy and appetizing, being supplied largely from the family’s highland farm. The set menu caters for the kind of appetites that are stimulated by your Tanzanian active holiday lifestyle, although special dietary requirements can be met if notified at the time of booking via AfricanMecca. Breakfast in the restaurant consists of fragrant Tanzanian tea of coffee, cinnamon bread, still warm from the oven, fresh fruit, and full English serving of bacon, eggs, beans and fried tomatoes. Beverages such as Tanzanian tea and coffee are freely available throughout the day, but decaffeinated coffee is not provided. You are advised to bring your own if you need it. A flavorsome buffet lunch may offer a choice of hot or cold dishes. Meat, salads, pasta, pizza, rice and pastries are available in the dining area, followed by dessert, or a packed picnic lunch may be requested to take on a full day game-viewing tour of Ruaha. Sundowner cocktails are served in the bar, around the campfire by the river, or at a designated site as you return from your early evening outing. A three course dinner with vegetarian option can also be served in the bush, on an elevated kopje site overlooking the Ruaha hills or in the lodge restaurant, with a good selection of local and international beverages, beers, wines, cordials, spirits and liqueurs. For your safety, in the evenings you will be escorted to and from your room by the camp security staff.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
