GUIDE ON LAKE MANYARA TREE LODGE IN TANZANIA

Navigation Tip - Go Directly To Prices, Reviews, Map, Photos, Video & Room Rate Guide For Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is a charming and extremely atmospheric base for your AfricanMecca photo safari to Tanzania. It is the only upmarket premier andBeyond lodge actually within the small, yet very special, Lake Manyara National Park. Situated at the end of a dirt road, 120 kilometers South West from Arusha and 40 kilometers from more frequently visited wilderness areas; it confers the experience of intimate wilderness living in a uniquely varied area of serene beauty.

It is a perfect venue for the true connoisseur of African travel, deep in the southern mahogany forest, where the animals look smaller and more approachable in the dappled shade of huge trees than they do against the bright, short grasslands of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Areas. It makes a contrasting stop-over destination on your trip of Tanzania, midway between Tarangire and the latter two on the Northern circuit.

This small, quiet, and secluded gem in an area of evergreen “ground water” forest is crossed by a small river where pods of portly hippopotamus wallow, attended by egrets feeding on leeches which pester them, Geese honk on the nearer bank while zebra amble on the farther side. Beautiful Lake Manyara lays its silvery spell, covering up to two thirds of the total 330 square kilometer area. The dramatic purple escarpment of the Great Rift Valley falls 500 meters to the valley floor, forming diverse habitats for many different populations of terrestrial and aquatic animals, birds, and plants.

Accommodation At Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Securely nested in groves of impressive mahogany trees, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge comprises only 10 wonderfully exclusive and atmospheric stilted tree houses. Wide windows open to the romance of leafy woodland. Built from faded, natural wood, and thatched with makuti palm ferns, each luxuriously appointed suite boasts a wide verandah with table and chairs, bamboo screened outdoor shower, en-suite bathroom with vanity basins, flush WC, and stand-alone bathtub with forest views.

Generous sitting areas of contemporary design in colors of earth and straw complement dreamy tree bedroom with cotton bed-linen, natural fabric furnishings, ceiling fans and mosquito nets. The “heart of nature” African vacation theme utilizes raw wood railings and wood-chip steps, to unite each dwelling seamlessly with the surrounding African bush.

Sleeping in a fly-screened tree-house gives a fantastic boost to a trip to Manyara with AfricanMecca, with bush babies calling from adjacent branches amid the entrancing sounds and rich scents of an African night. Room service is exemplary and in-room massage is available.

A split-level central lodge complex offers comfortable sofas in a roomy lounge, well-stocked bar, and open-sided viewing decks above the forest floor. There is also a bracing forest pool, and a Safari Shop featuring its own brand of clothing and local community craft work. Wi-Fi is available in the main guest areas. There are also safari activities for families traveling with young children in Tanzania.

Safari At Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

A Lake Manyara Tree Lodge safari offers many memorable tour experiences and activities in Manyara. When lake levels are high, aquatic wildlife experience peaks, amongst a myriad water fowl. Pelicans are unexpectedly beautiful as they bury their heavy beaks under water and arch their huge wings like an armada of swans. You may even spot a Cape clawless otter, and a thousand frogs.

There are guided mountain bike safaris, special private honeymoon safaris, hiking safaris, activity safaris, such as abseiling from the escarpment, and cultural safaris to Mto wa Mbu in the North, where you may meet representatives of up to 120 tribes, in a virtual one-stop tour of Africa. These activities are not offered by the lodge as standard but can be added on as supplementary activities.

The most rewarding activity is the game-viewing drive, when a skilled AfricanMecca guide will conduct you in convenient comfort in an open-topped, 4WD people carrier, with on-board radio for communication to share fauna tracking intelligence to maximize your chances of seeing all the sights you dream of on your holiday to Tanzania.

Birders are assured of seeing at least 100 of the 440 species found here, which include 44 species of birds of prey. Increasing farming on park borders, and a lake which shrinks dramatically, combine to drive a high density of game to riverine habitats (read more on best time to visit Lake Manyara). Aesthetically challenged warthogs and elegant giraffes, as well as ponderous elephants, and darting mongooses share with hippopotamus and the tree-climbing lions for which Lake Manyara National Park is justly famed.

Dining At Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Dining at Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is an entrancing adventure in itself, a worthy addition to your African wildlife safari experience. Fresh, locally produced food is presented to the highest standards. Your day begins with aromatic wake-up Tanzanian tea or coffee served on your verandah with biscuits or rusks whilst you contemplate your Manyara tour wish to be communicated later when you meet your AfricanMecca guide.

A morning game viewing drive, perhaps south to the sulfurous hot springs at the foot of the Manyara lake, passes gangs of playful infant vervet monkeys swinging from low hanging branches, and heavy olive baboons, belying their menacing appearance as they groom each other, appearing to kiss as they use their teeth to detach tasty parasites.

A snack and hot drink sustains you until you return for fruit, cheese, breads and cereals or a full English breakfast if you have worked up an appetite. Lunch is prepared in the restaurant, full view in an interactive kitchen, giving insight into the skills of a first-class chef and waking your taste-buds with appetizing aromas.

A dip in the forest pool, or a siesta, takes you to afternoon tea and another discussion of objectives for a later afternoon game drive with sundowners in the bush. Dinner, with silver service and champagne, can be taken pool-side by lantern light, in the dramatic boma or stockade area, edged with dug-out canoes, or prepared in a bush kitchen and supplemented by desserts from the restaurant.

  • AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.
