Wildebeest on the move!!!
The whole atmosphere around the Great Migration across the #Mara River is often a waiting game of chaotic false starts as herds gather and disperse throughout the day over and over throughout the day.
This was one of those times where some of the herd got spooked and took off across the grasslands.
I’ve used #ICM or Intentional Camera Movement when taking these images using to blur to emphasise the movement and chaos. Hopefully you think that is what I achieved ❤️❤️❤️

In just a few months, the Southern Serengeti will come alive with one of nature’s greatest spectacles — the wildebeest calving season.
Every year between late January and March, more than 400,000 calves are born on the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. Within minutes of birth, each newborn stands and takes its first steps, a race for survival in the wild.
This is the season of new life, and also of challenge. The plains turn into a dramatic stage where predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow the herds closely, taking advantage of the abundance of prey. Yet the cycle of life continues, reminding us how perfectly nature balances creation and survival.
Calving season is not only breathtaking to witness but also deeply moving. It is the best time for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to experience raw wilderness at its most powerful.
🌍 Witness this miracle of life in the Serengeti and Ndutu Plains with Make My Safari — where every birth tells the story of Africa’s endless circle of life.

💔 Mara River — The Deadly Crossing 🌊🦓🐃
Every year, the mighty Mara River turns into a battlefield of survival.
More than 10,000 wildebeest and zebras lose their lives as they struggle to cross — swept away by strong currents, crushed by the herd, or caught by lurking crocodiles.
Yet, this tragedy remains part of the Great Migration, nature’s most breathtaking and powerful story. 🌍

A wildebeest Mara River crossing is not only dangerous for the wildebeest because of the crocodiles waiting in the water, but also because the riverbank becomes very muddy when large numbers of animals are crossing. The condition of the riverbank depends on the water level of the river, but is usually steep and difficult to climb down or up. The more animals have crossed the muddier it gets and the more difficult to climb.
Despite the high number of animals crossing and the pressure from the herd, the wildebeest manage to change direction when an exit gets blocked and even do their best not to hurt struggling members of the herd.
This video shows two wildebeest, a mother and her youngster stuck in the mud, with the other wildebeest trying to climb up the bank at a different spot. This spot proofs to be too difficult to get up and they have to get passed the stuck wildebeest. They try their best not to step on them and some stop, spending a moment with the little one. While this unfolds, the herd had changed direction to a different exit. If they hadn’t done that, the stuck wildebeest would not have had a chance to get out. Mother and youngster made it out of the mud.

A family of brave zebras lead the heard of wildebeest across the Emboo river.
We left our camp around 6am and waited at the riverbank until the animals decided to cross. Finally, after we baked in the heat of the Maasai Mara all day, the animals decided to cross at 5:30pm. Once one animal goes, they all follow. In this case the zebras were first, and about 5000 wildebeest followed.
‘I wanted to depict the darker reality of the well-known wildebeest migration,’ says Simon. Returning after a stampede at first light he saw this pack of spotted hyenas gorging on the lifeless trampled bodies of those that didn’t survive. As one hyena momentarily broke from the feast, it gazed across in Simon’s direction.
In the surge to cross the Mara River the blue wildebeest struggle to climb the deep gullies they carve – many slip and perish under the hooves of those behind them. Spotted hyenas, with jaws powerful enough to crunch bones, will devour everything except the horns of their prey.
In a new guest blog series, #WPY52 Mammals winner Simon Stafford reveals what it was like to witness and photograph this natural phenomenon.

The migrating wildebeests of the Serengeti landscape give birth to calves anywhere from January end to March beginning in south Serengeti. It’s called the calving season and one can see thousands of wildebeest calves in the Ndutu conservancy.
We saw this wildebeest one morning struggling to deliver her calf. The mother kept trying to push the baby out but just couldn’t manage to. We saw her trying till late afternoon but it seemed the calf was dead and she couldn’t deliver. It was quite heartbreaking to see her sit down frequently out of exhaustion and continue trying to push. You can zoom in and see the legs of the calf which is how it was for almost 6 hours. We didn’t see her again that evening. Apparently she would risk losing her life if she couldn’t deliver the dead calf. I wonder what happened to her and if she survived at all. I hoped she did.

Every year, around 1.5 million wildebeest, 350,000 gazelles, 200,000 zebra, eland and other ungulates participate in what has been called the greatest show on earth – The Great Migration – in search of grazing and water. This typically occurs at the end of the dry season, wherein these animals head towards the western woodlands. .
When you encounter about 1.5 million animals across 4 species, moving in the search of greener pastures and fighting their way through hurdles big and small - hunting predators, absence of water, weak offsprings, and much more, you really start putting things into perspective. It is times like these when we realise the magnitude of the various natural phenomena that world has to offer! .

On 09 January 2016, history was made again when KenyaLive gave the world spectacular views of a Kenyan night game drive. It would be the second digital game drive in the country building on the hugely successful MaraLive - the world’s first live web broadcast of the great wildebeest migration.
Make It Kenya in partnership with HerdTracker used a combination of the most innovative filming technology and Twitter’s Periscope app, to give people around the world unprecedented access to some of the most exciting and rare animal behaviours in an 11-day digital safari through 50 live broadcasts.
Using a red-spotting lamp, the nightly secrets of the Naboisho Conservancy, which borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve, came to life for the whole world to see in real-time. No one at that time could imagine how relevant this technology would get in years to come. Now we know. You can read the full stories in our blog.
