GUIDE ON SERENA MOUNTAIN LODGE IN KENYA
Seated on equatorial deck with the panorama of the African wilderness spread below, you will have the incredible opportunity to view a veritable show unfolding before you. Herds of elephants and buffaloes wander into sight to drink at the waterhole and vanish into the bush. Birds like weavers, silver-cheeked hornbills, turacos, bee-eaters, Egyptian geese and many more appear almost magically and chirp while dipping into the water while monkey troupes and speckled antelopes opt for their turns (read more on when is the best time to go to Mount Kenya). These are moments of your forest vacation in the uplands of Africa during your stay in the tranquil environs of the Serena Mountain Lodge, nestled in a woody area of the Mount Kenya National Park at a height of 2134 meters above sea level. The primary build being entirely of wood and operating on eco-friendly principles, this deluxe ark-like lodge has been constructed on high stakes and is raised above ground level up to a welcoming deck that is accessible by a drawbridge. The lodge has 41 guest cabins, each with either a glass-paneled window or a verandah overlooking the waterhole and salt lick in the clearing below. AfricanMecca guests can spend almost the entire wildlife tour of Mount Kenya watching life go by around the waterhole along with a monkey or two stopping by to visit you on your deck. The Serena Mountain Lodge gives you the impression of living inside an old-fashioned wooden ship, in compact cabins decorated with subtle style reminiscent handicrafts of the Kikuyu tribe. Couple of bottled water is provided for brushing, room service and Wi-Fi is also available. The attached bathroom comes with quality toiletries, hairdryers, bathrobes and slippers. You can also request for laundry services on a long stay and if you need to store documents and cash for the duration of your dream trip in Mount Kenya, the reception has a safety box for your use. Because of the wooden make of the room, smoking is not allowed inside the lodge, though, they do have a separate smoking area. The nights on the highlands of Mount Kenya can be cool so hot water bottles are tucked in the beds at night, and on your request, a member of the staff could awaken you to view nocturnal animals stopping by a quick drink. The dining area and the bar also face the clearing and have a central fireplace where its heated elements are lit every evening. Its warmth adds a cozy ambience to the common room that is only enhanced by more artifacts from the African tribal world. This area is located at a level that allows you views over the carpet of trees in the forest. As you choose and dine on a variety of global and local dishes from the buffet, you can continue to watch visiting animals. Vegetarian dishes are also available and fresh local produce used adds a different flavor to every dish. If you would like a bush dining experience on your climb holiday in East Africa, appropriate arrangements can be made for you. The lodge has another special feature. A tunnel leads to a hide where you can sit and photograph animals from just a few meters away. You could also go on day or nightly treks up Mount Kenya or just nature walks through the forest under the guidance of a trained, experienced naturalist who will talk about the wondrous sights around you. Fishing is another thrilling part of your AfricanMecca adventure as the foothills of Mount Kenya have many streams rushing down them that are abundant with trout. Put in your own distinct contribution to the beauty of the forest by planting a tree and take home mementos of your authentic travel in Kenya from the lodge’s gift store in support of local artisans.
